Epoxy over EDP coating

I'm going to shoot epoxy over EDP and can't remember if i talked to Barry or this was in another thread, use thinner or reducer on 6''-8'' area rub in circular motion check rag for any discoloration. If ok scuff with scotch bright pad or 320. I assume the different color pads are different coarse grades. Is 320 ruff enough for epoxy to bite into or should i drop down 1-2 grades ? Thanks

If you’re gonna scuff/sand the coating for epoxy- may as well do 80 grit - takes the same amount of time and 80 grit is recommended

This is covered in the Tech Manual. Go back and re-read the Tech Manual to familiarize yourself with using SPI Epoxy. If you don't have one you can access it on the SPI website.

No 320 is not enough. What is acceptable? 80 grit DA or hand for bare steel. 180 grit DA or hand for existing surfaces.

Personally I would DA it with 180, epoxy it and go from there. If it's something that you are just trying to get done, used car work or the like, then scuffing the edp and sealing straight over it will work.

Why is it okay to spray epoxy sealer over sanded 400 or higher grit sand scratches? How, and what, is the epoxy sealer bonding to?

The depth of scratches differ between substrates. Steel leaves a much shallower than aluminum, urethane, fillers, etc. 80# would leave a much deeper on soft substrates, for instance.

That's a question for Barry more than me. I'll say this though. 80 and 180 refer to the initial application in order to ensure max adhesion. Nobody's saying it wont stick with finer grits but your adhesion will not be as good.

Maybe @Barry can answer the sealer question better.
