Intercoat Clear for Pearl Stripes

I would like to paint Black Pearl stipes over white base coat. My question is should I lay down a intercoat clear over the entire basecoat or just over the area where I plan to put the intercoat mixed with the pearl in following coats?

I think just past the area you will be laying the stripes would be fine. This will help avoid tape lines, and smudge or glue residue will be easier to remove without getting into the base.

is your white base a pearl or solid? if its a solid and you let the white flash a couple few hours then there is really no need for intercoat at all.

Base coat will be a solid white, would it be ok to remove tape glue residue with Mineral spirits ? I am using the finese tape for the stripe.

yes mineral spirits is a little more gentile than the 710 but both will work. if your tape is leaving residue then you need to find different tape. i have used the finesse tape before. its packing tape with a low tack adhesive. that tape doesnt leave residue when its fresh. key word fresh. if its been sitting around awhile it leaves residue all over the place. i quit using that stuff years ago. there is much better out there.

What tape do you recommend? The blue 3M shrinks and leaves glue around corners for me, especially when it"s hot, which is most of the time here.

The Tape Im using is the Finesse Paint Pinstriping Stencil Tape F52.

I’ve had real good luck with the 3m purple . It takes a corner easy and doesn’t shrink back and pull loose . Don’t know if they make the double stripe though . I lay the 1/4 inch- take cheaper 1/8 inch and lay that beside it - then lay 1/8 inch purple next to that - then pull the cheaper tape up in the middle and you have your stripe - a lot of tape but it comes out nice —— the 1/4 purple is the only one I found that will take a sharper corner and not pull up - I’ve done quite a few chevelle stripes and they have a tight corner

I always go by how comfortable you are. You are a new member, so dont really know your painting experience. Being an improving novice, the intercoat is a little insurance from saving you sanding into the white.

Zero need for intercoat in this case. No real need to worry about tape issues if you give the base enough time before striping. Overnight would be plenty. Main thing is to not have anything masked for too long a time. Tape it out just before you shoot, shoot it, untape it as soon as it is dry enough. This way your tape is only on there for a few hours. Always pull straight back on your tape for the cleanest line possible.
People run into issues when they leave tape/masking on basecoat for several days or more.

Didn't know what intercoat was last time I laid bc/cc stripes.:p Was fresh yellow colored 3m fineline tape back then. 2 base colors, hood stripes & clear all done in 1 day. LONG day.
