hello! i have been wanting to try some speed clear seams ideal for me and my shop conditions...i have a project needing a hood and bumper cover and part of the A pillar repaired and painted...but its getting cold here in va now.and was wondering how cool can you use speed clear and if it needs polar and if so how much per quart.my shop on a sunny day will be 40 to 50 degress in november..appreciate any and all info

No polar needed, just fast activator.
You're pushing the limits with any clear at that temperature.

yep i was thinking these cold temps would cause me problems...but needed to here from guys with more experience .ill be in search of some safe heat for this project...thanks Barry and Chris for the input....ill be calling SPI next week for supplies.

You can use a diesel or kerosene powered space heater. Especially if you have a drafty work area. People do it all the time. Just be sure to have some fresh air venting into your workplace. Just make sure you never have one of these running while doing anything with gasoline. Ultimate safety would be either vented propane or electric, either one used ceiling mounted. But something like that reddy heater will work great for most of your needs. Get one with a thermostat and use common sense when running it. Keep the area well vented, a carbon monoxide detector would be a good idea as well.

Miltary one my father got from auction has heat exchanger. Its old, not ready for sale till next yr if ever, diesel engine 400,000 btu on trailer. Must be more out there. Also friend has in old house kitchen a long radiator type that vents out wall, made for indoor use.

It often amazes me the guys that come to my shop looking for advice, but won't consider making the basic necessary upgrades like heat and a clean, dry air supply. There's almost no use talking to them. Good thing that most of the guys that come to this forum have enough sense to take good advice.

And i've spent an hr looking for direct vent kerosene units for ya'll but no dice.
Nat gas & propane's all i see. My friend did hvac & it was 30yrs ago.

There are furnaces that burn used oil for mechanic's garages. I imagine they could be adapted to burn a different liquid fuel like diesel, but not sure. They are always vented to the outside.

My friend has an old oil burner in his shop. He's not too particular about what he burns in it as long as it's liquid and flammable.

i have used a space heater with farm diesel for years . i have a large one i heat my 40x60 with . it will keep my booth at 70+ when it's freezing outside. i have a small one i put in the booth first thing in the morning to get the metal temp up to around 80 .

I use a torpedo heater with kerosene to heat my garage to a tolerable level
but use a short wave lamp to really cure the paint.
I'm usually painting only a panel or two so the lamp does it better.
Unless it's extremely cold out the lamp will keep the garage warm too.

thank you all for the input on heating options...i do have a ceiling mount propane heater to keep air temp good, but when i shut it down it cools off quick..but will look into some heat to get the metal temp up...well its just a hood and the A pillar thats metal and a bumper cover..i use to have one of those torpedo heaters that must have been out of tune because that thing sputtered and sooted up the shop..lol oh by the way the speed clear came in today along with a box full of white cheddar cheese doodles instead of peanuts ..lol

Well shoot. I guess I am about out of something............:)

you'll never heat that building with those high walls.
Considering that 16'+ uninsulated ceiling, I'd do what two of my friends did. They built small paint booths with 8' ceilings out of 2x4s and sheet rock in a corner of their large shops. It only taks two stud walls, two swinging plywood doors and some 2x8s for the ceiling. Place exhaust fans to the outside near the floor, and lots of lighting on the ceiling and walls. They both have storage above. That way they only have to seriously heat the booth for painting purposes. One long weekend and you're in business! For extra utility you can run copper pipe for the air lines with drops to the regulators/driers of your choice. The sky's the limit! (Drawing is for plasma cutting, but you get the diea...)

yes that ceiling needs insulation..good eye AAE .walls are 6 inch insulated just last fall...ceiling is next on the agenda. walls are 14 foot...dont have any problems heating it its only 24x28...my only concern was it cooling down too quick when i shut down heat to paint and clear the fog...i may do a test run by cranking up the heat and shut down heat and vent the shop and see how much time i have before i get into the danger zone. thats why i think the speed clear be ideal for me with back to back coats saving a good amount of time without flashing...next week there will be temps in the upper 50s and sunny...i will do the bumper cover then.....thanks again for everyones input!!...i will report back how it goes!

Hotter u get it longer it stays warm.
Insulated my attached home garage ceiling & was told its a waste. Best cheap money i ever spent.
