Speciality Fillers

Hi Guys,

Been an SPI Fan for quite some time, and active of some of the other auto focused forums.

Anyway, I came across a post about Evercoat 870 VPA being a good filler for c pillar/sail panel to roof seam.

How many have used that on a steel car, and what were your results?
Anyone a fan of Fibertech with Kevlar/Fiberglass strands?

Thanks

I have used not only on vettes as my only filler but also on a 280sl and a GTO for door gaps.
usually on metal gaps, I would use brass for door gaps, but SLs are aluminum, and the 870 over epoxy worked so good on the SLs use on a goat for giggles and ease of getting perfection

Thanks Barry, and I appreciate you jumping in here Shine. Actually the guy I found talking about it. Amazed, I've never heard of this stuff on any other forums and its hard to find even when researching directly.

i have never had an issue with vpa and it is the go to filler for bonding seams on corvettes . you wont find an experienced corvette builder with any duraglass in his cabinet .

i need to get a qrt of quantum 1 and test it . been out a while now so if there were any issues they should be resolved by now .

Just curious but was this a particularly thick application of the filler?
I have never used it or heard of it but it sounds interesting.

maybe 1/8 thick. I have used Duraglass in this application before and on my particular car 17 years ago and it help up fine. Maybe the formula has changed and is junk now. I don't know.

Funny, I used the VPA (heavily I might add)on the fiberglass hood and trunk lid and see no signs of shrinkage...

i have been using the quantum for years. expensive but its really good stuff. the best filler you can use on anything glass or metal is adtech p17. will be hard to find. only available from marine or aircraft suppliers. its a solid plastic when its cured. its not a base resin with fillers to make it thick. its solid like kicked off polyester resin in a cup. doesnt shirink since there are no fillers and it wont absorb solvents of any kind. its also a structural plastic so it has strength without any glass in it. its a very high temp filler also. good for 450 deg i think. no swelling or ghosting in the sun. only drawback is its much harder to sand than a regular bodyfiller. if you havent used it before then you should look into it

thanks jim , i bought some quantum back when it first came out . did not really excite me. i actually think my mix was off . just never got around to trying it again . the vpa worked so well i kinda forgot all about it. i'm big on anything epoxy .
my old shop was down the street from a marine repair shop . i use to buy filler from them back in 82 for vette work . cant remember the name of it but it dried up like concrete .

yeah the p17 isnt something you would want to skin a whole body panel in a block it out. works better for repair work, fixing spider cracks or anywhere you would use something like west system mixed with silica or glass powder for a filler. stuff is really bad ass. not that you would but you can build it up thick. in boats they fair in corners of the chine with it. race boats that run 200 mph and its 1.5" thick in the corners. no cracking. stuff takes a beating. i have always liked the quantum except for the mix ratio. that can be tricky sometimes. never had it shrink on me and it sands super easy. the high temp cat is nice because it gives you a ton of time to do something big like skin the whole roof at once.

i was using the stuff for fixing headlight openings that were cracked. nothing else would hold up . also used it on flares and such . next job will be a while but i think i will order a gal of quantum for them .

I used P17 on door edges and hood mods on my corvette, also small spots on the front lower valance. It's structural but a bit harder to sand, but great stuff for fiberglass. I'll have to try the E 870.

Jim, are you using the p17 before are after epoxy primer? I wanted to try it on this boat hull I have stripped down for air pockets etc. but I can’t decide which might be better....

Use it direct to glass. On boats epoxy primer is always over your filler or repair work, never sandwiched between.
