Hello everyone. So today we sprayed. SPI Epoxy for the 1st time. DA'd 80, cleaned w 700-1 here in CA and now is just drying.

I also learned that my Dad ( myself and him are doing this project) is on quarantine due to COVID 19. The project its at his residence. He is not sick but my mom was around a co-worker this week that is now In the hospital. And we both wear P100 respirators or face masks when near each other.

Hopefully everyone is ok. Back to the project. This epoxy is gonna sit untouched for the next two-weeks. Was hoping to start the body work this week over the fresh epoxy but that's no longer an option. Do i need to scuff the epoxy before applying body filler ? If yes, what grit and how often?

Being weekend warriors, once the body work is done, do i scratch the entire cab and then spray the SPI high build primer? I just want to know the process moving forward. Your insight and knowledge is appreciated. Please, teach me as if i have no prior experience becuase i have none w SPI. Stay safe out there.

When it sits past the seven day period I usually sand with 180 dry before any filler or to reapply more epoxy. Then apply another couple coats over any filler. Before applying 2k you will have to sand any epoxy that has sit for longer than the 7 days.

Here is what I've done in the past in your situation. Spray epoxy. If possible do filler work next day. If not possible then I usually sand with 180 dry. Clean good then apply filler . When that's finished apply another couple coats of epoxy. That 'sandwiches" your filler work between epoxy. With epoxy not being porous your filler will be safe from absorbing moisture. Then apply any more primer that you need to finish up the job. Epoxy must be sanded after it sits past the seven day window. Hope this helps.

I, personally, would feel better scuffing the epoxy with 180 and a red scotchbrite, then spraying one more coat of epoxy, wait 24 hrs, then filler. Same after filler, before hi build.
I agree Texasking, I believe I was told that adhesion is better this way.

Good start by using spi it’s great. Cannot go wrong just read and follow the tech manual and lots of good info here too, it’s the best.
I’ve been using it the first time too on my current project. If you can do some of the body work under the 7 days it does help but sometimes it’s impossible, less sanding and less epoxy and waiting.

the one thing I dont understand is why can body filler be put over it after 24hrs but spray polyester fillers (featherfillG2/slicksand) needs 48hrs? Probably a good reason for it, just wondering why.

Polyester primer goes on quite heavy and has a lot of build, but it’s loaded with solvents that may be too harsh/strong to sit on top of 24hr epoxy.
