Classic Car prices

Lol. The one 348 I had could never get it to not run hot...and every single powerglide I've had leaked....the 283 run like a sewing machine and good on gas...need that these days
IMHO all powerglides are oversized paperweights. Two speed tyranny just doesn't cut it, in any car, at anytime, "original" be damned.
"W" series chevy motors (348, 409) can be very cool, especially with tri-power. Just don't Rev high, they were designed as a truck motor for low end torque and will come apart above ~ 6000 RPM.
 
Powerglides (aluminum) make the best dirt car transmissions. Only 1 forward gear needed, lightweight, and bulletproof if built correctly. My Dad taught my son how to build them when he was 13, and we never had one fail. The leaking problem was usually the shifter shaft. They make an aftermarket one with an o ring groove that solves the problem.
 
I am restomodding a 1970 VW Karmann Ghia. The prices recently seen on BAT for Ghias are making me rethink the restomod approach. A few years ago these cars were seen as disposable but interest has suddenly shot up if BAT is any indicator.

I think you can thank the Motortrend channel for some of that uptick in values. I know Danny Korker and Joe Martin both did one recently, and I think there was another one in the last year or two. Maybe the British guy from Wheeler Dealers
Yes I watch these shows, but I enjoy picking their work apart when ever I can. I try to learn by other peoples mistakes first.

people spending mega bucks on collection dont care what anybody else thinks . they have their finger on the pulse and know exactly what these cars are worth. they have been collecting far longer than any of the tv bs began .
 
I'm still trying to get over Festivas bringing $6-7K! No shade on you Astro but those things were absolute penalty boxes. Only redeemable thing about them was the gas mileage. When I was young I worked at a Shop that rebuilt dozens of them. They were hard to get straight as the metal was thin and really low quality.
What is the appeal of them to you Astro?

Social media has changed the way things are done. I dont like it. These guys are buying cars without seeing them. It makes it real hard for people who build cars to get a solid builder without being connected on social media and spending 6 hours a day on the phone. On my recent search I had 3 cars sold out from under me after the sellers gave me their word. One of them I was literally getting ready to hit the road. They do it for whoever will pay the highest dollar. That's not how it should be done. I sold both of my cars on Instagram in less than 8 hours. Good for sellers, bad for builders. Thats how I sum up what's going on in the market right now.
 
What do you guys think about Dynacorn bodies? One of those is about the only way I'll ever be able to build a 67 Mustang. Impossible to find a good builder IMO. Clapped out trash fastbacks bring 15k or more nowadays.
Would love to have a Brookville 32 3 window body as well.

The problem with Dynacorn bodies is they will bankrupt you buying all the little pieces it takes to build a car. A donor is still needed imho.

Thousands of Sportsman bracket racers will argue with you about the powerglides.
 
Been on a lot of mustang forums- read a lot about sheet metal. Some say Dynacorn isn’t the best fitting or quality. From my research NPD seems to get best reviews . It’s my understanding that ALL the sheet metal is made overseas and the only real difference here in the U.S. is which companies have stricter standards on what they accept. I don’t mean to change the subject of a thread but just thought I would respond to the Dynacorn thing - you are correct on ratty mustangs bringing big money! I got lucky on mine (68 fastback)- paid 10 grand and it’s in GREAT shape compared to what I was seeing for 15 grand - the guy said “ 10 grand and don’t try to talk me down cause I know what I have !”- I said “ no problem - here’s your 10 grand !”

NPD is just a reseller like many others. All of the reproduction stuff comes from 2 or 3 companies in Taiwan The quality control of the Dynacorn bodies is better than individual repop parts that you can by from most vendors.
