stripping a corvette

stripping corvettes became big in the 70's. by then most corvettes had been repainted at least once if not more. kemstrip aircraft stripper was the rage. used widely around the country. later in the 80's we started noticing the bonding seams were showing and cars that looked good would have bubbles along the seam . old age and just normal many of us thought.
what i feel was happening was the stripper was attacking the bonding agents and causing this. i also found that any paint / primers/ fillers left on the car would cause a multitude of problems later on. solvents in the stripper would penetrate the fillers or primer just as it was designed to do . problem was there was no way to get it out of the filler. cleaning the surface did nothing for the solvents trapped in the filler. welcome to the world of bubble .
i have not used it since the late 70's . many still do and that is fine . but think about this. brake fluid or a/c oil will migrate all the way through the glass. it is porous and will soak up anything. not like gel coat there is no barrier.

this is just food for thought and worth just what you paid for it.

shine, what grit sandpaper do you finish with on the fiberglass/filler before shooting your first coats of epoxy?

i have a blasting set up but a razor blade and heat gun works fine. i blast the older vettes to get to good glass.

i just recently spent some time watching youtube videos on stripping a corvette . god what a nightmare . they need an editing function . i saw more ways to NOT do it than correct ways. especially with a razor blade. few blasting horror shows but some really bad blade work .

Shine maybe you should do a paper titled The Perfect Paint Job for a Corvette? I think that would be great. :)

thanks . my surgery was the 31st so i'm just about over it . i have 4 rounds of chemo to do starting in a few weeks. that will shut me down until fall .

News to me too. Get well Shine!
This might help- my friend down here fractured his ankle twisting & falling wrong turning off a light switch.
Edit- seriously though, wish u the best, i've been in chemo room for a MS drug every 4 weeks for 10yrs. Hope u get cool nurses like i do. I lift the ones i can in there getting chemo & try to help them find a bright side to chemo. Most appreciate it.

Praying for a complete and speedy recovery Shine!

Looking forward to see your work on that next Vette. I have always wanted to do one but very afraid of getting one beyond salvaging since I don't know much about them.

Almost 7 years to the day. , june 2 2012 I had my left upper lobe removed . Small tumor no chemo . This time , may 31st , it is the right upper lobe .again small tumor but right next to a lymph node so doing 4 rounds of chemo for safety .
I have had an X-Ray every year since I was 30 . Catch it early and you can survive . I quit smoking in 92 but started painting at 14 . A checkup cost about 100 bucks once a year .
I don't argue about the dangers of painting . I know first hand . I don't know what the future holds for me . Hopefully I can still work . I'm sure it be at a slower pace but he'll I'm 68 so I guess it's time slow down. Selling all but 10 acres of the farm . my land is my retirement .
Thanks for the well wishes and prayers .

What the heck. Get well soon or even sooner than soon Shine. Heck you are the reason I am here and even placed an order for some SPI Epoxy Primer. :)
