Painting 56 chevy hubcap

P

pa2000xxxx

i have a new set of chrome hubcaps. I want part of it painted white. ive attached a pic of mine and a pic of what I want (eBay pic). My question is regarding what paint will work. Will pinstriping paint adhere (OneShot) or will I have to scuff and epoxy primer, then top coat?

Just as an option to painting......Danchuk Mfg. has decals to replicate the design of the black (or white) on your eBay pic.
#963-white
#964-black
$10 each

Have not used them so don't know the quality. Paint is still better but it depends on the car...... show or driver.

I appreciate the info but they don’t fit. The 963 sticker is for the BelAir hubcap. It’s 10”. My wheel is a Chevy 150 or 210 and it’s 9”. How do I know? See attached pic, also called Danchuk today. I’d much prefer a sticker on this driver car, but looks like I’ll be painting

paint is better if you can get it to stick. Chromes whole purpose is not to allow anything to stick to it so it stays chrome. If those are reproductions its probably that Endura chrome that peels off anyway, but I think they are cleared over so at least you can get something to stick to the clear coat.

We just got some reproduction tail lamps for the camaro and that flat black they used just scratched off. If whatever finish is on there is wrapped around to the inside, I would just use that area to check for adhesion, but they most likely did not clear that if its the endurachrome unless they ecoated it clear.

Carefully mask around the areas to be be painted and the balance of the hub cap, then sandblast the area to be be painted. Remask as needed, apply SPI epoxy, then top coat.

Worked well for me. Will post picture later, as I can't access it from this computer.

No need to sandblast. What Barry recomends and has worked well for me and others is very simple. Mask off around the area you want white so as to protect the chrome. Sand with 180 grit. Probably by hand judging by the small area but if you can get a DA in there that would be ideal. Sand until you have scuffed it completely. Then spray at least 2 coats of SPI Epoxy (the best, really no equal on the market today). It needs to be epoxy not urethane or acid etch. Then proceed as you would with any primed surface. Ideally I would let it sit in the sun for a day, come back and wet sand it with 400, shoot one reduced coat of epoxy (1:1:1) as a sealer to promote adhesion, then proceed with color, be it a basecoat or single stage white, and finally clear it if using base.
This has been done many times by many people and as long as you are using SPI Epoxy and follow those steps, adhesion to the chrome will not be an issue.
