May I apply base coat over cured SP epoxy

Done right, most things are a lot of work. Including doing restorations or general paint and body. I'm like 356 Porsche stated above, I don't really care for wet on wet sealer because it adds texture and the nature of wet on wet (urethane) inherently shrinks over time. Even wet sanded and...

    Clear availability

Thanks Barry. I think we are all feeling the consequences on many different levels. I'll be calling and checking weekly on the UV.

Is there any update on when clears, specifically UV, will be available again? Thanks

Would like some advice and opinions

Chris I'm just reading this. I haven't been on the forum much lately. Only you can make this decision but don't let emotion make the decision. Let the math make it a business decision. The overhead seems awful high for a one to two man shop to make any money. You'll spend every dime you...

    Minimum price charged

I had an employee move and went to work for maaco. I asked him and he tokd me he was limited to one quart of synthetic enamel for the "special". Car gets washed with a scotchbrite and straight into the booth. He noted that the "special" is for same color only because they don't put enought paint...

    Minimum price charged

I've been in business nearly 30 years. I learned a lot of lessons the hard way. The one thing, I always did quality work. I was never the cheapest. Someone is always willing to do LESS for CHEAPER. But are they even qualified or experienced to do BETTER than you. I really don't have a...

Epoxy layer was soft after coat of poly

Santa Claus might bring you one. There are ways. I had multiple redneck heating methods from late 80's to 2003 when I put in the downdraft. Trailer house air handlers with heating strips are great and cheap. I used them in various evolving booth engineering for years. Hell I got one now I...

Epoxy layer was soft after coat of poly

Yes indeed. Here is SC we are good to go spring through early fall. We have an "epoxy procedure" once the night time temps get below 55 degF. We're fortunate to have a baking booth. Our procedure is to mix the epoxy and put in the booth with the vehicle. We do a short bake cycle of 15...

Epoxy layer was soft after coat of poly

I've been using SPI Epoxy for years and on this forum for a number of years. These issue come in around this time of year and it's almost always temperature and time related. If you can't bake epoxy, you really need to keep it as warm as you can as long as you can.

    IR curing paint booth

I am in the early stages of opening a second location. I have baking forced heated air downdraft booths (2) now. For the new location I've noticed how much cheaper IR curing booths are. I have medium and short wave lamps for curing filler and primer. What are your thoughts or experience with...

    Prices.

Barry thanks for keeping these products reasonably priced. Pricing was the factor try of your products. I started spraying spi on some budget stuff for family and friends (favors). I really liked the way it looked and sprayed. Because it was people I was close to, I was able to keep track of...

Is there a way to verify you have total coverage with basecoat when painting parts?

Most of the differnce between budget paint lines and the better ones is just pigment load. 20 years ago I was a Matrix jobber and they offered MSB (Matrix standard basecoat) and MPB (Matrix Premium Basecoat). The MSB had more binder and a little solvent and the MPB had less binder (same toners)...

    Finishing wood

I remember some time ago there was a thread about using spi (I think intercoat clear) on wood. I skipped over it because at the time I didn't care. I've always used auto finish for cars and relied on wood finishes for wood. With that said, I want to spray a blue candy over some wood. Anyone...

Valspar Lvbr100 or Nason ful-than base?

My largest issue with valspar was not color match or spraying. We repair a lot of trucks and suvs. We had a nearly 50% failure rate where a vehicle had dually fenders or flares. Those areas would get a little wrinkle at the contact point. From there the basecoat would razor blade off. Second...

    Painting door jambs

And over applied. People tend to spray far wetter on horizontal surfaces like hoods. This over applied wet bed allows the metallic to move around orient differently in the center of the pattern rather than the edge of the pattern.

    Converting Booth to LED

I didn't go back and read all of the post but I did convert mine as well. I kept my fixtures and did the LED balast by pass tubes. I chose daylight color. I've been very happy.

    Genverde base

Thanks for the compliment. I've had a lot of mixing systems over the years. Everyone has some ins and outs. I'm very happy with MIPA after 2 years. It's almost a dead on to Glasurit. Like Glasurit and Diamont, I wish white covered better but it's a 3-4 coats over gray primer. Color match...

Valspar Lvbr100 or Nason ful-than base?

I had a Valspar system in my shop and I wouldn't touch that junk again with a 10 foot pole. I've sprayed all of the formally Dupont line including Nason, all of the BASF lines, all of the PPG lines. 30 years in business. I've had mixing systems in my shop: PPG DBC, Diamont and glasurit...
