    Solid Head Rivet Installation

This was the tool for the hinges and latches on the bags and supposedly tour packs. I would remove the hinges and latches for any paintwork, everyone else around here taped off. I modified the tool on the left for about a 6” throat so that it would do the tour pack hinges. 1/2” thick 6061...

    Solid Head Rivet Installation

The one that Harley sells as a service item will not do the rivets on the tour packs, not enough throat depth. Only deep enough for the saddle bags. I’ll take a picture of mine that was slightly modified and get a dimension for you.

    Solid Head Rivet Installation

Those are semi-tubular rivets, the intent is for the thin area to roll outward until it contacts the metal, pulling things together. If you have a spare or two to practice with, I'd suggest a large pointed punch to get the outward roll going before hammering with anything flat. Here's the...

Yes Ms.Spears, I did it again!!!! Lol

Looking at the bare metal, it now appears the stretching was due to someone using a disc grinder to remove the paint. Any media blasting that may have been done in addition could have added to the issue if that was done incorrectly. Looking at the grinder marks, there was quite a bit of...

    Fabricating a Stubby hammer

Got some new help (Paul) in the shop, since Jared is becoming a more full-time student pursuing his Mech Eng degree. Paul visited a local garage sale last weekend and came across a MAC tools body hammer for $2. Egad, it's pointed!! So it was the perfect candidate for a ball-end. We added...

Yes Ms.Spears, I did it again!!!! Lol

Lou, this is more an FYI... To elaborate on Dan's observation that it may have had a replacement quarter put on: The red line "appears" to be where a weld line would have been placed, and in the vicinity of the body line would have been a good choice for weld location as the body line...

    Fabricating a Stubby hammer

I had two more commissions last week, and went ahead and made a third while I was at it. This one is made using a Snap-On BF611 and adding the S2 steel ball-end. A fresh Hickory handle with plenty of character. Available....

Next step for the console, we need to cut some holes for the shifter. Using the Chevelle style horseshoe shifter, we don't have the factory style brush seals or trim bezel for the center plexi indicator. So lets see what we can come up with first to seal the shifters side arms. I didn't...

    Fabricating a Stubby hammer

Here's the hammers from last week, a matched pair of ball end hammers sent out to Schierer's Customs in AZ. These were made using a "flat" faced BF611 short pick and a BF618 low crowned chisel.

Thanks for the comments fellas.. More console work, time to fabricate the hemmed surround for the insert. In order for the surround to be seamless, we need to do some welding. For our corners we relieve the flange and trim the back side to about half the hem width. This gives us less...

    Post your shop tour here!

What brand did you get? So a word of advise, resist the urge to use a cheater bar when the lever does not have enough leverage or more accurately, your metal is too thick. Those curved side plates are actually cast and are the weak point that cracks when you force things.

    Fabricating a Stubby hammer

Since I don't have a mill... :p I use the lathe a bit for making tooling for the Lennox and other turning operations, and have used it for milling before. For my use, I'd say lathe over milling machine

Another commission, this one a BF611 for a stubby ball end hammer. Casting marks on the sides of the hammer ground up into the weld area to make it look like it came that way..

    Fabricating a Stubby hammer

Well I broke down and worked on my BF612 the other day. The Snap-On BF612 was designed for better access in tight spaces by someone who's never used a hammer in tight spaces. Otherwise they would have known that over 90% of those tight spaces are inside of a door, fender, or quarter panel, with...
