The guy is STILL replying to his own posts calling SPI garbage paint, the Cooper Tires of paint.... wow Barry must have pissed him off or something in the past!

Jim tell him the snobs at the Pebble Beach and Amelia Island Concours events would beg to differ about the quality of SPI. Best of Show's and Best in Class awards don't lie.:)

I realize it's not a Mopar, but post a link to this article.

The GTO was all SPI and done around 8 years before the sale. $682,000 for that car.

Awesome build thread, Jim. I spent time reading through all of it. Am I correct in that this is your third build? The Coronet is gorgeous! Did you post it's build here too? Quite an inspiration for me as I begin the paint and body work on mine. This will be a first for me and I'm a bit nervous. Lot's of good people here to learn from though. I will continue to follow your build. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks yes this is number 3 in as many years.....

The more detailed threads are on the Mopar forums. I did not post much here about the Coronet outside the paint job. Here is the Coronet...

and the Duster....

Read through much of the Coronet build, as it was your first build.....HOLY SMOKES!!! My friend, you are a man of perseverance. That paint process certainly gave you some grief. But look what you've done......beautiful! Thank you for posting up your blunders in that build, helps guys like me.

Failure is the best teacher there is.

You shooting solid or metallic? Solid is much more forgiving fixing mistakes in real time. I have played with a few metallics recently for friends simple panel spray and I got metallic for the Dart. After spraying out the Mototbase metallic my confidence is much higher. It just covers and suspends the flakes. The cheap Nason was almost transparent and the flakes floated around and was a pain to get looking right.

Went dual sport "riding" last Sunday so nothing got done on the car...

Started by cleaning and bonding the trunk lid to the supports with the correct 3M goop. Almost everyone had come loose. Then weighted it so that is would be exactly like the factory bonds. Next I shrunk the hood so it would not oil can. I had a lot of help from the guys on the SPI forum and I bought a video from a master metalworker....

Metal Shaping Zone

Took me a few hours but when I was done the oil canning was gone and I sanded off 75% of the filler I had. it is definitely and art and a "feel" to know where and how hard to bang.... I am not there yet but I am starting to get it... While the epoxy was inducing and drying for the second coat I blocked the RH side. There are a couple of problem spots so I will put it on the jack stands too along the door and get it straight...

Plan on adding goop to the hood tomorrow as well before getting it flat. If the rear was dried out enough to come loose the front can't be far behind.

So today I started on spooning with the trunk lid.... ;). I am starting to get how to shrink and stretch metal. I still don't really understand why you have to do what you do to shrink it but it works. Got all the oil canning out plus almost need zero filler.... notice the missing blob of bonding... it will become important later....

Look mom, only 4 places I had to heat it the rest with "being one with the panel" and knowing where to spoon and dolly it.

Added the bonding to the hood to supplement the existing.

Shot it with epoxy ready for ..... wait for it...

Trunk is close to done...

On jack stands so the body lines are correct.

Need filler here to make it perfect...

DSC_0401.jpg

Use the tape as a straightedge

DSC_0403.jpg

Sand it like you would without the tape so you don't crack the filler when you pull the tape.

Sanded and 2 coats of epoxy... ready to go...

I needed this.... shot the Motobase Mopar dark turquoise base...

While drying look how little filler I need! The spoon is my friend when blocking now... I thought this trunk was going to have to be replaced.. Thanks @MP&C and @Chris_Hamilton..

2 coats of Universal Clear and wow, Cheryl has done it again... Image the chrome/stainless and white accents against this color!

Car will be sight for sore eyes when done. Great job.
