1978 Mustang II

Yesterday a couple of boxes came in from Mustangs Unlimited. I ordered a 69 Mach 1 hood scoop and the rear spoiler.

The body was stripped to bare metal and epoxy primed with SPI black epoxy

We still have to repair the rust but at least this will stop the surface rust.

I sprayed a couple of coats of epoxy to seal the bodywork.

A had enough Slick Sand polyester primer for a couple of coats

Block sanded with 80 and found one low spot that required a little filler

Two coats of SPI Turbo primer

The hood required a lot of work but I'm happy with it now.

Nothing exciting to show. The doors had a lot of door dings and a little rust that was cut out and a patch welded in place. The doors were sanded to bare metal and sprayed with 2 coats of SPI black epoxy. I finished the body work and sprayed another coat of epoxy.

The next day I sprayed 2 coats of SPI Turbo urethane primer

Have a few memories in one of these cars,, sliding sideways down back roads at speeds we probably shouldn't have been doing.. lol..

The back of the hood needed a little work

Couple coats of SPI Turbo primer

I block sanded and sprayed a couple coats of black epoxy.

The hood scoop was block sanded and sprayed a couple coats of black epoxy. After wet sanding will be sprayed SPI matte black.

The fenders have been sprayed white epoxy almost ready for SPI orange paint

So how is the Turbo 2K high build compared to Slick Sand ? I hear so many good things about Slick Sand but haven't heard much about the Turbo 2K yet. Things are looking good by the way :D

I did not like the mopar gas cap or the rust

The rust was cut out.

Eleanor gas filler kit from Mustangs to Fear was welded in place. A gas filler neck from a 1968 Mustang was also used.

Billet gas cap from Mustangs Unlimited

Looking real nice!
I always liked the Mustang II body.
Be cool if you could do away with the impact bumpers and get something more early Mustang and chrome on there...
If anyone could pull it off it would be you!

Well never mind about the bumpers, I just read back through this thread and you are way ahead of me... :)

I thought these were ugly, but I'm always interested in seeing how good an ugly car can look. It doesn't take much effort to make a '68 Fastback or 69 Camaro look good, it would be much more impressive to see one of these look great.

I can't wait to see the orange. I just ordered a couple of gallons to paint my brother's 1969 mustang coupe.

I'm still not sure about the color I have a lot of red on the shelf.

The lead was removed from the seam and we found rust

The rust was cut out and patched

Rust was cut out of the rear hatch channel new piece was welded in place and epoxy primed

Epoxy was brushed in that area and I sanded and added a little filler. Since we had a couple of patches in the channel I decided to add filler and also fill all the spot welds in the channel

I wanted a cleaner looking taillight panel so the Ford holes were welded and ground down

The bodywork is finished on the taillight panel

"I did not like the mopar gas cap "

I thought that looked familiar.

Scottrods rear bumper fits great. The original bumper brackets were cut off and two holes were drilled in the trunk for a test fit. Add a few more bolts inside the trunk and a couple on each quarter and your done.

We found a 8" rear from a 1965 Mustang. The spring perches are a little wider on the rear but we made it fit. I ordered a 1" lowering kit.

I installed a Rod & Custom front suspension in my 1968 Coupe and upgraded to Baer brakes so I used the original ones that came with the kit on the II.

The wheels and tires are from my son's 1994 Mustang just to test fit. 245/45 17 on an 8" rim with 5 1/2" back space. The front tires clear but the rear hits the leaf spring and I have about 2" clearance to the quarter panel. If I would have used a rear from a 1967 up Mustang they would work.

I'm going to reshape the front of the wheel well for a little more clearance.

The front bumper was to wide and shaped wrong at the bottom

I cut and taped a piece of aluminum

Added three layers of fiberglass mat

Removed the aluminum

Still needs a little work but it is close
