2K primer question

2K regular primer tech manual says mix only what you immediately need. What exactly does that mean? Mix only enough to fill the cup on the gun? Mix enough that you may spray in 30 minutes? Any guide lines for me?

It sets up fast....mix to much and it could set up in your gun..depending on temps, 30 min may be to long...after spraying some you get a feel for how much you need....clean gun right after spraying

In hot weather either use some of the polyurethane retarder and/or only mix enough to do one coat, especially if you are priming a whole car or multiple panels/areas that will take some time to do a complete coat. Smaller panels use retarder and mix only enough to do 2 coats. Clean the gun between coats.

I sprayed some 2k SPI the other day for the first time in awhile, forgot i ordered it awhile back. Anyways, I'd say after 15min and going back to shoot a second coat it wouldn't spray. Lesson learned!

But on another note, it seemed to lay out smoother than I remembered.

With the latest 2K regular formula you have more time to spray. I was in a shop where at the end of the day I was spraying 5 cars with black primer, just jumping in between jobs. Some spots small, others big areas.

Metal temps must have been around 60 F, in 25 mins I sprayed about 22 oz without a problem, no sandpiling or dry spray, went on pretty smooth in all panels.

Once the weather starts warming up spray time may be shorter but so will the flash times between coats so you end up with the same results.

I gotta ask if there is more to this story. Barry said gel time is 150 minutes and you got 15? Did you use polar?

Could of but lets say no polar and 70 degrees.
Je set at 76 would give you about 25 to 35 mins spray time and every 10 degrees higer cuts gel about 15%.
At 150 gell time about 45 to 60 mins spray time.

Do remember there are a lot of factors that decide what the net gel time is.
How much are mixing cup off?
What angle did you look at fill line?
Humidity?
Temp of can contents.
How well did you stir in the hardener? (This can kill 15 mins)

I mixed up 20oz.. I just mixed it how I normally do. stir it up for a min then dump in my gun. I dont really over think these things! No polar was added.

Primer and hardener have 2018 dates on them.

I am by no means complaining here. I havent sprayed the 2k in a minute and have been using only epoxy so I was used to a very long window.

Here is my exact process if this helps.

1. Mix up primer (20oz)
2. Sprayed first coat, went on real nice.
3. Put the gun on the stand, hit up youtube and IG while I killed 15 min.
4. Sat there and pondered my life decisions and what put me in the position that I need to do this stuff every night after I already work all day.
5. Snapped out of it and went for to the second coat.
6. Went for a second coat and it sprayed really dry... ok here we go......Cleaned the gun, the primer looked liquid, stirred it up...went at it again, and it did the same thing.
7. Removed the dekup again and the primer was clogged up in the gun. so I just mixed up another batch and that was that.

#4 is a constant.

Maybe I'm just blessed but I have never had any issues with the regular 2k primer. It's all I have ever used for a few years now.

We sell a ton of it and most don't BUT the less experienced are the ones that do, not all but most of my calls are about.
Bottom line like all automotive products are the better the product is made the more temperamental it is to fine tuning when spraying.

@orangejuiced86
Been my experience as well. First coat sprays nice, second coat dryish. Both the Regular Build and Turbo. Why? I don't know maybe Barry could give some thoughts.
I've got a bunch of priming to do in the next day or so, I'm going to try some retarder even though temps inside will be around 65. See if that extends it a bit.

I bet there's dried buildup in the tip. Try cleaning the tip between coats.

Has to do with one of the types of zinc used in the formula, that's easy to fix, but I want the protection.

Also, pug tips or internal screens will make worse then primers that don't use this type of zinc.
