2k Regular Build Flat?

A

Antznyopantz

Hello all.

First time painter here.

I've gone through the steps - epoxy, regular build surfacer, blocked out with 320, and then DA with pad and 600 to take out 320 scratches. I intend to shoot a metallic base and high voc Euro 2020 clear.

I used a guide coat when blocking.

The guide coat has been sanded away but when I looked over the primer after sanding with 600 grit I noticed areas that looked mottled. There are small darker spots in patches here and there. My concerns is that these spots are darker because they are lower and have not been sanded enough.

Again - I did use a guide coat - which is now gone - and when I rub my hand over these spots I cannot feel any variance in the surface.

Do I need to sand these spots more or is the variance just color that I should not be concerned about?

I've attached a photo. One of the areas I'm talking about is inside the red half-circle.

Thanks!

What did you use for a block, and did you start with 320?

320 is to fine for intial blocking.

It is better to start with 180 on your first round of 2k blocking.

The circled spot is low.

I'd advise blocking with 180 if you havent.

Photos can trick the eyes. To me it looks a bit like a sand through to the previous coat. Sometimes there is a faint telltale between coats, especially if the flash time was long, temps warm, or the material was pretty fast for conditions.

Thanks for the note on grits Sprint_9. I'll definitely start with a coarser grit next time.

Crashtech - Thanks for the input here and throughout the forums. You've been helpful many times!
