2k sealer questions?

H

Hotbo

i have talked with Barry about this and i have tried many things to no end?

i am having problems with kinda of like a dry spray pattern after i spray my sealer.

rough texture ect.

i use SPI 2k sealer, reduced 4-1-1.i have went threw all the different temp ranges to find the slowest temp helped but did not totally do away with my problem

keep in mind i do collision repair work.

if i have small areas that i use it on its great, the larger the work area the worse it gets.

for instance i did the side of a 08 Denalli today. 80 degress in the shop, metal temp was any where from 74-76.4

i used 895 Spi reducer,i had to spray the whole side pretty much( i use sealer on just about everything i repair and new parts).

it left a dry spray film after it dried.i took a brand new tack rag as soon as it flashed good and it pretty well ruined the rag.then it was a rough grainy texture(again i only get this on larger areas).

to help fix the problem i usually come back with 1-2 coats of intercoat clear and it fixes or i sand lightly.

i have been having this problem for some time and i usually dont post these kinda things as it is my job to learn the product or adjust my self for it and i just cant figure it out :mad: majorly pissing me off!!!!!!!!!!!

i have used all kinds of sealers in the past PPG,Dupont, ect. for years at a time and never ever had any act like this?

it does it worse with the Black.Grey is better and white is close to the same.

i spray my sealer with a Devilbiss GTI millenuim gun i have tired 1.3-1.4-1.5 and the results are pretty much the same

air pressure anywhere from 20-30 psi and it still doesn't solve my problem.
i have tried my Geo gun with a 1.4 and it done the same.

i spray most everything i have with my Milleniums(3) as i know the guns well and they treat me well.

this is not a rant on the product or anyone else, just need some Help i guess,LOL!!!

i love this sealer as it dries quick and that's what i need.

am i the only one having this issue?

thanks for any help and advice.Travis...

Never had a problem with the any of the SPI sealers regardless of the color. I do add a bit more reducer I mix it at 4:1:1.5 or even 2 at times. Spray it out of an Iwata LPH-400 1.4 Im guessing a bit below 20PSI, 75% overlap, goes on wet and pretty smooth after it dries.

Have you tried more reduction, or a bit less pressure?

Sorry I'm not of much help.

Jorge.

I've been over reducing mine aswell very nice sealer, do you strain it before the gun?

I agree with Jorge, lower air pressure and add more reducer, However This is not the first time I have heard this and I slowed the sealer down last year but I'm going to look at activator and adding a little more tail solvent today.

laying in bed it dawned on me to add some more reducer(sometimes i over complicate things),just wasn't sure if that was okay.ill give it a try at 4-1-2reducer.

i would have thought lowering the air pressure on a thick sealer would cause me more rough issues?

thanks guys for the responses so far.im all ears and will try to over reduce it and start lowering my air pressure more and more if need be to see what that does for me,Travis...

i love the sealer if i can get it to lay out better, lol!!!!!

yes i do strain it,what affect would this have?

i know on the can it says 4:1:1 but thats more where i spray it for a primer. the spi sealer is a real close match to hok's koseal. side by side you need to mix spi's 4:1:2 to match the koseal. as a primer i spray the spi stuff at 4:1 - 4:1:1. you will still always have a little dry spray but its just microscopic dust and doesn't affect the basecoat at all. it all just melts in when base goes over it.

thanks Jim i was messing with it today and i like it better at 4-1-2 if its okay i might reduce it more?

I reduce it 4:1:2 but I havent sealed any completes either so I havent had any promblems on the partials I've done, monday I will be doing a complete so guess I'll find out then, and Im also shooting ppg envirobase Jim so guess it wont be melting in lol.

Hotbo I was just asking because some guys dont filter it or run the "prefilter" in their gun and if theres any dust in the cup your gun will shoot it out in the sealer.

i dont know anyone who use a filter in the gun...

try the 125 micron strainers from gershon.. there for waterborne but work well on sealers and clear.

i never run a filter inside my guns.

thanks Guys for the ideas and help,Travis

Hotbo,
Thanks for the feedback on the dry edge.
I had a chance last night to play with the sealer and 2K primer as they both use the same activator. although at 70 degrees i could not duplicate what happened to you, making a few small solvent changes to the activator I was able to increase evaporation time, that should help for large areas and as we get to the lovely 100 degree days.

We just made 1500 activators this week but as we run out in next couple weeks the new activators will have the changes incorporated.

We do listen, Thanks.

i love the shit outta everything i have bought and before its all over i will have tried everything you make,LOL!!!!

i am just having some issues that i am trying to work out and so far over reducing is helping some, although i haven't done anything other than smaller areas 1 fender or door so far but the results are better, still get a little dry film im not use to?

you guys have a great weekend and thanks fellers for the Advice and thanks Barry for the superior Help and Products you make.

Travis...

Been reducing 4-1-2 and working much better for me,thanks guys and Barry...

Anyone use the revised 2k activator yet? If so, any difference in how the sealer sprays?

The new 2k activator will not be available until about noon today.

The initial test samples I made, that tested real good and we were about to make that day we got a call that the opened activator after setting turned yellow, so we made a regular batch.

What it was is one of the lab samples of solvent had been in the gallon can to long and started rusting but it took two weeks to figure that out.
False alarm but better safe then sorry.

I did a couple of jobs this week now that I've had the same issues as mentioned from the op, Barry are you releasing the new Activator right away?

Yep getting Hot around here, over reducing helps a bunch but still not perfect.

cant wait for the new activator to come out,i have to order some supplies next week.

Travis...

Activator is ready to go as of yesterday, new is in quarts only right now.

Did an intial of 600 quarts as I want feedback and may go a notch slower but I did not want to get to carried away all at once.
