Does anyone know the difference between the two of 3M platinum filler 01171 and 31131? 01171 says just platinum and 31131 is platinum SELECT ..... is one better than the other? can find any reviews comparing the two

Read the differences for yourself here:
Platinum Select

Platinum Plus

Essentially Select is their top of the line filler Plus is the second level and regular platinum is the third level. Main differences are select claims to be nearly pinhole free which may be true but mixing and application plays the largest part in pinholes so that's more of a marketing claim. Both have an adhesion promoter (another thing I'm dubious of) but if you apply filler over SPI epoxy you will have the best adhesion promoter there is . Probably the main differences are a the grade of resins used in the various products which mainly affects how it sands. Either one used over epoxy would work well.

now its been years since i have used the platinum or the plus but i can tell you that i liked the platinum far better than the plus. it sands way easier.
thanks Jim and AAE. just to clarify are you all talking about the regular Platinum filler which is 01171 or the platinum SELECT which is 31131 ( the platnium PLUS which is 1131) they have 3 different fillers

I use the 31131 because it suits my style of spreading. It has the right consistency which I can't really explain. To me it's like a cross between regular filler and glaze. Nothing is pinhole free for me because I don't press hard enough and spread in only one direction, but it's probably the lowest in pinholes that I've used. I can't remember the 1131, only that I didn't like it...

the regular platinum. not the plus or select. select wasnt even out when i was using the 3m fillers. this was way back when 3m just bought marson.

I was actually sent a case of the 3M Select 31131 from 3M to demo for them. I used the whole case of Select 31131 and afterwards when contacted on what I thought about it, I told them I still preferred the Platinum Plus 01131 to it. Here is what I found to be the main differences.

The Select does spread a bit nicer, but outside the window, like overnight I found it to sand harder than the Platinum Plus filler. Also, I found as well as several shops in my area that the Select filler does have micro pinholes, and I don't get those in the Platinum Plus filler. I simply prefer the Platinum Plus. I also demo'ed the Rage Ultra, and found it to be almost like the Platinum plus, but it also sands harder next day or once outside the window plus it costs a bit more. My two favorite fillers are the Platinum Plus and the Rage Ultra. This was after demoing 16 different fillers over a 2 year time period. I usually don't select higher priced products, in many cases, but I did land back on the Platinum Plus 01131. Now with that said so you don't get confused 3M also makes a Platinum filler 01171, and I have not used that one. OFC, that came out before the Platinum Plus did. My understanding was Platinum Plus 01131 is a better version of the standard Platinum filler 01171.

It should be pointed out 3m and Marson are the same.
A great mid price filler, and when someone ask, those are the two names I recommend

I switched to the Marson filler when the prices for Evercoat products started climbing to absurd levels for a product that most of which ends up on the shop floor. Tried the plus once and didn't like it. Reminded me of marshmallow fluff.

I believe 3M bought out Marson and I read somewhere that they left the Marson formula the same. Not sure I believe that but it has been so long now that I couldn't give you specifics for why.

The 3M 01171 version is what I still use and have never had problems with pin holes, however, I use the Evercoat Plastic Honey when applying my final skim coats. This stuff is fantastic and you only need a little to make the filler lay down slick and still sand easily.

Your right 68 RT, Dynatron purchased
Marson years ago and 3m bought
Dynatron.

sounds good, when you say a" little "plastic honey does it go by a percentage like when adding harder? I never used plastic honey before but see it mentioned often though

Since you are dealing with different amounts of filler being mixed at different times, I just add a little, mix it in and if needed add a few drops more until I get the consistency I'm looking for.
You'll get the hang of it real quick. I added way too much the first time I tried and hence I recommend starting with a little and working your way from there.
