69 Fastback Mustang pro-touring build

question….. did the rear end need to be narrowed ? If so, how much…. Working on a 68 right now and contemplating tubbing it - just not sure if the “ juice is worth the squeeze “- I’m going with a 3 link so I’ll be getting rid of the leaf springs

The rear end is narrowed but it doesn’t have to be. Generally guys narrow rear ends so they can use wheels with less backspacing so they can have more lip, or a deeper dish wheel. I run a stock width rear end in my 69 Camaro with minitubs because I’m not one of those guys. 12 inch wide wheels with a 345 tire.

The main reason to minitub is to run wheels and tires that are two inches wider than can be accommodated without minitubs.

The one caveat is you never want more lip on the front wheels than the rear wheels.

I see where guys will add a 4 inch strip between the inner and outer wheel housing- does that really accomplish anything without notching the frame ? I will gain some room by getting rid of the leafs - gonna be cutting the quarters off soon so I’m trying to see what I need to do while I have access - 68 mustang by the way

After further thought - I guess it could maybe create more room at the top of the tire- sorta “square off “ the well

Generally you have to notch the frame rails to install minitubs. In the case of the Mustang a whole section is removed and a new jogged piece of frame rail is installed.

I would recommmend you purchase the Detroit Speed minitub kit. Much nicer and a well engineered solution. No surprises.

There is a guy here in Arizona that has two 1970 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet Mustangs for sale.
They need total restoration and he only wants $37,000 each or two for $70,000. Can't believe how the prices for these cars has skyrocketed.

I've been trying to decide what power plant to put in my 69 mach 1 build. I thought the godzilla was designed more for a low end torque engine for pulling. Have you verified the hood will fit without interference from the engine? What trans. , front drive system, and headers are you using?
