8000 trizact

anyone try the new 8000 trizact discs yet? curious your thoughts. i got a box here. used it a couple times but i just got the discs not the whole system with the special buffing pad and polish. this is supposed to eliminate compounding all together. just polish when your done and thats it. i was told the 5000 is getting discontinued and being replaced with 8000. the process is 1000,1500,3000,8000. originally i thought the 3000-8000 jump was going to be too much but after trying this stuff it seems to cut just as fast or maybe faster than the 5000. i have had no issues going from the green eagle bufflex which is the 2000-3000 range right to 8000. that part of it i find good. i was just not too thrilled to go back to 3m with their special polish and pads.

8000 grit sounds interesting, all just another way of doing things though. Large jumps in fine grit sizes these days seems to be more common. I'd imagine it to be a somewhat soft pad.
Could also be great for making a little improvement on thin ass new car paint without taking off too much.
I'm interested in it as I got a bunch of old school sandpaper & am running out of buffing pads & compounds. Need to invest soon. Only played with a few trizact discs.

you dont have to BUT the whole point of the 8000 is that you dont have to compound anything. when your done you just polish it out real quick with their polish and you done. 1 buffing step.
I get that but curious why whatever polish you love now wouldn't suffice.

for polish i use the prefect-it ex. the black stuff purple bottle. that doesnt do the job. this stuff they have is special for use with their specific pad and made for the 8000 trizact. its prob a little more coarse than regular polish and breaks down to ultrafine. just guessing though.

Sounds similar to the Meguiars diamond cut, which I still love for a heavy cleanup job with it's diminishing compounds. Sounds worth a try with any sort of diminishing type compound finishing after the new pads.
Jim, got a certain place you order from? I may compare it to local finishmaster pricing with cash commercial account.

I don't know, if Perfect-it EX won't do it, it just seems like it still should be compounded but it would be a very fast step.

yeah dont ask me since i havent tried the stuff. the finish the 8000 leaves when you look at it, its high gloss with just a slight haze. on an angle it looks like its polished already. all i can say is that its a whole "system" and its all made to work together.

i just got my 8000 from my local supplier. maybe $95 a box.

I have not used the 8000 system but know of a good shop who does and they love it. 3M has a few videos of course they make it look easy and great results. I think more sanding and less buffing.

I just dont understand discontinuing the 5000 step. Wouldnt you think once around the car with 5000 would just be a normal step to get to 8000?

Actually no. finer grits have much larger jumps in their stated sizes vs results as opposed to lets say 80 to 800.
Also think about it this way, if 3-m isn't trying to sell you an additional product, you don't need it.
Part of it is in technology. Beer & soda cans have gotten thinner, print has gotten smaller (not just my eyesight) and microtechnology in sanding has advanced. Cutting surface is more like a file than a bunch of concrete surface looking bumps.
Make more sense now?

Here is a decent review of using it as a one step (not totally flattening) cleanup on new paint. I also see that it needs a mist of water. Expensive , but said to last for approx 3 panels.
Jim, Was your box a 6" pack of 15? I'm price shopping before calling locally.

I see there is a part #30802 which has 5 3k sheets & 5 8k sheets.

I see in 3-m's video they have the festool air version of the 2 electric sanders I have. Nice tool.

yes my box was 15 discs of 8000.

the 5000 isnt needed which i have personally verified because i thought that was a damn big jump as well. i ended with green bufflex which is 2000-3000 grit. i then did one area with 5000 and another with 8000 and there was no difference. the 8000 took all the 3000 scratches out without a problem. fast too. trizact is just a different animal also. its hard to compare it to regular paper grits.

i am personally using my sonax compound followed by a quick polish with perfect it black....atleast for now. only because i didnt buy the whole system. i wanted to try the discs first.

I also noticed in the video that there was a quick connect adapter for a 2 sided pad that didn't attach to a backer pad as normal. Hadn't priced them yet, but looks expensive.
also to note in 3-m's video, those festool sanders have a pretty aggressive rotation to them.
