A woman's project: 1968 Mustang Fastback Eleanor

Car looks great but I thought you were going to spend your time at the beach not on the computer. I enjoyed meeting with you and Lauren while you were in Florida.

Wow, wish I had a wife that could and would, I envy you.
What great project! And that's coming from a Chevy guy.......

Nice job! Only you two can truly appreciate the work and thought that has been put into that project and that's an awesome accomplishment. My wife would have been throwing tools at me by the end of day 1.

Wow, what a job well done!

This is a great post and will help a lot of people trying to learn on here.

What ever happened on the paint deal? Dropped it off at Rusty's, while in FL?

Great job.
Barry

Thanks guys. It certainly has been a very challenging, but rewarding project. And yes it has at times tested our marraige, too! I have always said from the beginning that if she lost interest in the project we'd both stop. Wouldn't you know two years later we've finally arrived at making the decision of putting the drivetrain in or having it painted first. Suggestions are appreciated.

Rusty- it was very nice to meet you. Thanks for taking so much of your time for us. As far as the beach is concerned, we have to take a break every once in awhile, us northerners aren't used to the Florida sun!

Barry- Thank you and thanks for all of the help you've given us all along the way. We've had a couple body guys come look at the car since the last time Lauren talked to you and they gave us the thumbs up to keep on with our bodywork. Since we've been a little busy with things we haven't had time to call the shops you referenced. To be honest after spening some time with Rusty we just may have found where we want to have our car painted.

I like to paint the car without the drivetrain and interior it is a lot easier pushing it around the shop. You have to decide if you can handle installing the drivetrain after it is painted and not scratch it.

A few weeks ago we got the whole body in black SPI epoxy so that we could begin the final bodywork. In hindsight I wish we would have started with black but we didn't know any better. However after blocking the black with 180, the contrasting colors made it very easy to see the highs and lows.

Also, seeing the car in all black makes me want to have it painted black! But that's not up to me :(

While I sanded, Lauren worked the doors. Process instructed from Rusty.

Blocked with 180:

Filled the lows:

Then she shot 2 coats of Slick Sand:

Then she did it all over again because she wasn't happy; typical woman!

I also have spent WAY too much time on the fenders. I stripped the Por15 that we put on the backsides of both fenders a year or so ago. Then I sprayed black SPI epoxy on them. Unbelievable not only how much better they look, but I can also tell already how much better the epoxy adhere's to the metal than the Por15 did. Now we're on to the fronts. Same process as the doors:

Then the Slick Sand. Of course Lauren sprayed, she always gets to do the fun stuff:

Great looking project. Its also great that your wife and you can do something like this together

Looks nice.
How many of our wives can spray paint and do body work, or even want to? You are a lucky man! I think.....

If I had a helper/boss that looked and worked like that I would enjoy my garage time a lot more.

That car looks great!

Aaron

Thanks guys! Now if only I could get her to cook!!! (she's going to kill me for that one)

Well we finally got a new camera. Time for the pictures.

I re-masked the car this week to get ready for more body work.

Then a couple hours later she sprayed 2 coats of Slick Sand. We're running a little low on warm days, so we've got to kep moving. The metal temperature was around 76 degrees today.

Thanks Bob!

We are busting it to get everything blocked and finished up before sending the car to Florida. Rusty will be painting our car. We have shoppped for painters all around our area and found no one that we have been as comfortable with as Rusty. We have been very impressed with him. I hope he knows what he's getting in to! ;)

Our biggest resistant at this point is the weather. It's been mid sixties, but the temperatures is dropping fast. We can only prime in our building when the metal temp is well over 65.

Both fenders are officially done on our part.
