ABS sanding scratches

While removing paint with 80 grit I got into the ABS on one of my mirrors. I've read that sanding ABS with anything coarser than a gray scotch brite is a no no because they will show through. Do I need to bring the ABS up to a 600 or 800 before the 2 epoxy coats and 2K primer or am I ok with 180 which is what I'll bring the body filler to before next epoxy coats?

mirrors are not typically abs. i certainly cant speak for all BUT almost all i have looked at are glass filled nylon. if in fact it is abs then you dont even need to sand or prep it at all. the solvents in the paint melt abs. you can simply wipe it down and shoot it since the paint will bite in. glass filled nylon should have adpro put on it before paint. never paint over 80 grit unless thats on steel. get the plastic to about 220 grit, prime, sand and paint.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I'm not positive on the ABS, but I took a sliver from it and it melted away in lacquer thinner so I'm pretty sure they don't need ad pro, but correct me if I'm wrong. The mirrors are from an early 90s Le Sabre going on a first gen Camaro. I'll sand out the 80 grit up to 220 and proceed. I appreciate the help.

If the plastic melts with acetone or lacquer thinner then its prob abs and def doesnt need adpro. Get it to 220/320, prime and paint
