Acetone

I know Barry says not to use Acetone to clean when using SPI products. I was watching the Ding-dong's on Graveyard Carz and the painter yelled at the new guy because he did not remember to use Acetone to thin the PPG primer instead of reducer like he showed him? What am I missing?

What did you miss?
Mowing the yard?
Check the air pressure in your tires?
Chase momma around the dining room?
You missed nothing, LOL

I believe the only primers that call for Acetone for thinning and gun cleaning are Polyester Primers like G2 Featherfill.
It is never to be used for cleaning metal before spraying since it leaves a film. I did see where Evercoat recommends cleaning fiberglass with acetone before applying Polyester Primer but I no experience with that.

You didn’t miss it..... ding dongs !
Only possible use would be polyester and probably because their gun nozzle isn’t big enough. I used very little PP but never thinned it, kind of defeats the purpose. The acetone is good to start flushing the PP out of the gun though.

I always find it interesting that they usually turn the labels away when they are handling the products too. Big difference between wiping a part with acetone and using it to thin epoxy. That is the main use of acetone is thinning and cleaning epoxies. Probably the main ingredient in everyones epoxy reducers, they probably learned that the stuff they use either dries faster or without the peel if they use acetone instead so the next step is processed faster or easier with PPG products.
