Adding Metalic to SPI Base Black

If I wanted to add metalic or pearl to SPI Base Black, is that an option, or should I be adding it to a intracoat then clear coat?

I have added metallic to base, not had any trouble. its best to add it in your reducer before mixing it in the color. Of course, doing it in an intercoat is going to make the pearl much deeper. Test panels is the key, it does not take long before you get charcoal gray with silver metallic, brown with gold metallic.

you can add whatever you want to the black base. thats all any color is that you have mixed at a jobber. give them a code and there are usually half dozen or more basecoats that are mixed together to make your color. solids, metallics, pearls.

I suppose mixing your own would be a challenge for anyone to match down the road?

if you use spi black base then it will be a challenge no matter what since none of the std blacks i have ever seen on a majors paint rack is black enough to come close to it.

Thanks! I would only mix it with an intracoat since I want the option to color sand the clear.
