Adhesion Promoters

I have a rear bumper of a SS Monte that had a dog crawl all over it and it even has some real bad cuts from his claws. There was so much that i had to sand most of the paint and primer off of the bumper and even fill places with the proper plastic filler. Now do i prime first or do i use the adhesion promoter first then prime then paint?

I'm not familiar with that bumper, is it flexible and maybe yellow, if so it does not need an adhesion promoter.

If it is hard waxy type plastic, it does.

A good test is take a razor blade and shave off a sliver off the bottom and see if it floats in water, if it does, you need adhesion promoter.

well i'll check that in the morning and now i know if its yellow i dont need a adhesion just go ahead and prime and paint. i know the back bumper is yellow but not sure of the front nose of the ss monte. thank you barry

I have some deep scratches to fill on the bumper of my wifes Fusion. I was going to spray epoxy on them and fill with Dolphin Glaze. Should I use a "proper plastic filler" instead?

You probably should at least use Evercoat 417, which is designed to stay flexible.

Sometimes I have applied 2K urethane to bumpers with scratches, then brush a little more into the scratch. This only works if they are not too bad.

Don't forget adpro, the Fusion bumper will be TPO for sure.

well i got the nose off the SS and sure enough they are different the front nose is very very soft black plastic and the rear is yellow plastic and i cut a shard off both and put them in water and they both floated. now im really messed up. maybe they both floated because of the water to weight . i dont know. but i guess i'll spray both with the adhesion promoter. it won't hurt right?

Resurrecting an old topic. I never use Adpro on bumpers that I've sanded to raw. Primer never peeled back while sanding at all. If there where to be a problem, when would it be most likely to show up?

Stone chips will tend to grow into bubbles, etc.

I'm honestly astounded that you have been able to do that succesfully. Perhaps there is something about your procedure that helps adhesion?

Since I do mobile work, I can't honestly say there hasn't been an issue since I don't see the vehicle after the sale. I don't use a lot of primer, maybe 2 med coats.

Filler seems to stick better without Adpro. At least in the period I have with it.

I'll start to carry it with me.

primer and paint will just bubble on spots without it. it usually doesnt take long. will usually happen first time the panel gets real hot in the summer sun. filler on the other hand.....i wouldnt put that over adpro either. for that you just flame treat the plastic. carry a little torch around with you and run the tip of the flame over the area for the filler. no need to get it hot. just the fame tip does it. if you do it the plastic will accept filler like no tomorrow.
