Adhesive removal from base?

What can I use to remove adhesive residue from my stripes before clearing? Will W&G hurt the basecoat? Can I use something like 3M adhesive remover?

Mineral spirits-it's milder than wax and grease remover. JimC recommended this awhile back when someone was having adhesive problems when doing delicate airbrush work and needed something gentle to clean with-I've stocked a quart of it ever sense and it works well. Some basecoats will smudge with solvent based wax and grease remover.

yup mineral spirits is it. its gentle so you need to keep the adhesive wet with it for awhile to soften it up but it wont touch the basecoat.

Thanks guys, worked great. I let it sit awhile after removing the adhesive with the spirits , and washed it with soapy water. The clear laid down fine. I was nervous.

I had some airbrush work removed when I used SPI waterbased wax and grease. I used the w&g remover to remove oil from hands, etcc Do you recommend the mineral spirits also for body oils before clearing? THANKS!

For over airbrush work you have two choices. Mineral spirits or glass cleaner/ hok kc20.

Thanks JimC! I ordered some kc20 a couple of days ago and was kinda worried that it would do the same thing as far as removing airbrush work. Now I can sleep a little easier but not until I can fix what I messed up.

The 700 cleaner has a bit of acetone and alot of alcohol in it so it can be a little harsh on basecoat and really harsh on airbrush work. Kc20 is different totally. Its more like soapy water or glass.cleaner. once i use the last of my kc i am not buying anymore and will only use glass cleaner since its way cheaper and basically the same thing.

That is interesting. I have directed my helper to perform the initial panel cleaning with Sprayway that we get from Costco. We have never used it directly before paint, though.

Spayway is the best glass cleaner I've used.
I noticed Windex left a film when I tried once it to clean a van prior to applying vinyl, the masking tape wouldn't stick.
One pass over with W&G remover and the film was gone but I'll leave the Windex for windows...unless I have Sprayway ;).

No benefits other than it's a really mild cleaner and if you don't have much contamination to remove it works well for example: cleaning a two tone, stripes, or a graphic before applying clear. Sometimes you'll leave fingerprints when masking on basecoat and it will remove the fingerprints without disturbing the basecoat, it won't remove masking adhesive though.

An old posting but today I had a customer ask about using windex. He had both regular windex and windex ammonia-free but it had vinegar in it. I didn't think he should be using the one with vinegar. Any input from the experts?
