not really sure if this in the right spot but anyways i have a 6 string bass that im wanting to repaint. it has several little dents in it and i was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on what to fill them with. wasnt sure if wood puddy would stick right or if i should prime and bondo it or.... i do know that the flash times for stuff on wood is goin to be longer. any advise would be appreciated. this forum rocks.

I was in one repair shop years ago and for the minor imperfections they were using USC Icing two part glazing putty, I have used it on drywall repairs before, so should work great.

If you stripped the guitar or just paining over sanded material will change everything.
Also we need to know if the whole guitar will be covered in paint or some natural wood showing.

i would be sanding it down to wood because i have actually worn the paint off in one spot. im planning on covering the whole thing in paint, probablly a green with black sunburst.

Anyone that I have talked to doing what you are doing over the bare wood, spray a coat of epoxy and let it set 2 hours to overnight and then spray a second coat.
From there its no different then a car.

Wipe the small imperfections over the epoxy with the icing sand out with 180- 320 dry and then prime.

As for the repair part of it, regular filler or glaze works fantastic directly on wood. Use it all the time. As said its mot much different than working on metal.

thanks for the advise. hoping to start on this soon. chads sells paint right? maybe i will try to get some from him

Jimc, I have NO idea but I was told by one guitar maker, you sue epoxy as a barrier coat, or it can change the sound. I DON"T know, have no clue and my music talent, would call for an execution if I were to sing to you.

Well was speaking wood in general. I have done some guitars and i dont think you need to worry much on an electric. On an acoustic its a different story. I believe just the amount of paint on it can change the tone. I have not done an acoustic because of this.

That makes sense to me, the guy was restoring Gibson epitone or something like that.

lord i dont know how many getfidles i have done. did a lot of them in the 60's 70's. got my ass handed to me more than once for changing the sound. i think most times it is just them worrying about it runs them nuts. i did all mine in lacquer , used the best lacquer grade and premium thinner with a lot of retarder.the tuffest part is sealing the wood. it will gas out for ever. i use a lacquer sealer still on wood. i reduce at 300% and soak it many times, sanding between coats with 00 steel wool.
