'73 Javelin, all over "restoration" paint job. Will be painting Engine bay, inside of fenders, hood, doors, trunk as well as the outside of the car. Will one gallon of SPI dark red be enough for a newbie or should I just get two, mix them together and know I have enough for issues?

The base coat mixes 1:1 with reducer so 1 gallon gets you 2 gallons RTS (ready to spray).

Coverage depends a lot on the prep work and the color you are painting over.

Get two gallons. One will not be enough. At a minimum you will use 1.5 gallons of unreduced base. Probably more like 1.75 gallons. Doing what you are doing you may actually need more than 2 gallons. The SPI red epoxy for your sealer would be a good idea as it will help save on the number of coats needed.

I knew that is mixed 1:1 but was talking about the amount of base to buy. I like 8oz idea I assume that a panel would count the inside and outside as 2. I'm worried that I would 1, run out while in the middle of something or 2, the extra quarts would be off just a little. If I go ahead and buy 2 and mix them I know it would be the same even if used to make a repair.
Thanks everyone!

So I tried to skimp on the first couple jobs I did and you always run into something where you have reshoot a panel or you go overboard and decide to paint everything and then you start trying to make the 1 gallon stretch and then you don't full coverage... now I just suck it up and buy what I feel is too much and by the time I am done I put the last few pints away to fix chips later. Chris says 2 gallons I would have said 1.5 gallons. I would go somewhere in that area for sure since you are doing more like a Mopar where everything get painted.

You are correct, each panel is counted individual. Engine compartment would be considered 3 panels, with the firewall, left and right side. Generally the radiator support is small enough to be included in the 3 panels. Hood if painting inside and out = 2 panels, etc.

No worries with the mix being right. I had to buy an extra quart of Dark Red when painting this truck and it matched perfectly.

Could get 6 quarts and mix it all together before anything so its consistent. If u don't activate it. U can always keep pre mixed basecoat for the next round. I've even stored activated basecoat for a month and re used it

I would buy the gallons rather than the quarts. Two quarts is close to the cost of a gallon. Do all the jambs (if not painting in pieces) underhood and trunk, engine compartment then mix what you have left for the exterior. Only place you need to worry about any variance is the exterior.
