Base Coat brand recommendations?

I am looking to paint a 1965 Pontiac Lemans project and have been researching and reading as much as I possibly can on the subject. I have found several references to Pro-Spray on this board and it turns out there is a local distributor for them in my town. I plan to use SPI clear and hopefully SPI primer too if I can talk my local distibutor into taking back this Omni primer I bought. I'm not real optimistic on that though since it has been quite a while ago. Anyway, that leaves me with a decision to make on base coat. The other brand I have been considering is the "Planet Color" factory mixed paint from the local NAPA store. I have seen this referenced as Sherwin-Williams, Martin-Senior, and also Acme Finish 1. I would really like to hear any opinions on the Pro-Spray versus the Planet Color product. They are similarly priced at about $80/quart. Thanks in advance!

I have only used it on one project so far but it sprays and covers very well. I have about 7 quotes out right now and plan to use Pro-spray on all of them since cost is a concern to the owners.

When money is not an object I like RM Diamont.

ull get a recommendation for probably every brand... ppg, dupont, sikkens, rm, diamont, pro spray, matrix, etc... it all comes down to preference and budget...

planet color is a custom line of sherwinn.. its there version to hok.. its hard to compare custom lines to collision lines.. the custom lines usually have cleaner and nicer colors.. ive used planet color and still prefer hok to them.. some of there colors are alot pricer too.. what color are u looking for?

you will not regret using Pro-spray,many look at the price difference and assume its less of a quality base, but good enough.

all BS it is top shelf imo i use it everyday and its way better imo than top shelf top priced Shit!!!!!!!

Make sure you tell your pro-spray jobber to mix it in normal solids. Much better performance.

I wrote prospray yesterday to try to find a local dealer near Dallas. No response back yet, hopefully someday they'll get around to it

call the main headquarters,do a web search and it will give the phone # in Ohio.

yeah, I could do that, but it would be nice since they say "email us for dealer information" that they would actually answer emails.

I'm in no hurry, hopefully they will get back to me eventually

Chad is correct on this somewhat, lol!!!!!!!

he advised me to start out on NS only, and i did loved it except some colors didnt cover well at all,so in those colors(which you learn very quickly if doing collision repair)i am mixing in Medium solids.

i am having no issues what so ever with color match difference between the 2 solids.

the price is a little bit more on the med.solids vs NS depending on the color any where from 2-10 bucks from my experiences.

like me and Chad have discussed in PM s,i hope they keep there pricing in line and dont start hijacking folks!!!!!

B/c imo there base is top notch.

Travis...

I do use medium from time to time, but usually only on whites or yellow.... High solids could lead to disaster.

They definitely do respond to your emails. That's how I found out I had a local jobber. It took maybe a day for a response.

i have never tried the HS and probably never will.although Jobber is on me all the time for my blacks, whites ,yellows to use HS only, but WTF does he know!!!!!

they make more money on the higher solids than NS

the medium has plenty of solids and covers amazing.

like said the Normal does it most of the time, but i found some Red-oranges to not cover very well in NS and the white is crap in NS imo, even with white sealer it sucked,lol!!!!!!!!!1

at least they have different levels that it can be mixed in.

I finally got to look at an actual paint color chip chart on the Planet Color line and noticed that all of the pearls turn nearly black when viewed from an angle but look bright when viewed straight-on. Is that a characteristic of all pearl paints or unique to these?

sw doesn't make the pearls themselves. pigment companies make the pearls that the paint companies use so the pearls used in sw are the same as in hok, basf, dupont, ppg, etc.
