Base coat decision to make

L

Lane Stovall

It's time to buy my color for a project of mine. I haven't had to by paint in years. This is an all over resto. It needs to be nice but not a show car. My research has turned up alot of opinions as it naturally does. I have a temporary booth in my home garage/shop with descent air flow but no a pro booth. Called my brother in law who paints for a local dealership and got his reps contact, a local PPG dealer.
He quoted:pPG Deltron
1 gallon white
1 qt. black
Reducer
$1000

Cheaper option: PPG Omni Plus $465
Another supplier here in town quoted BASF Diamont $530
Its not a metallic. If I need to spend the money then so be it but I don't want to pay double for something that I dont need. Im leaning toward the Diamont. I have anither supplier that probably has more brands that I have not checked woth yet. I will be using SPI universal clear. Any advice would be appreciated.

1000 is insane for white. white and black are the cheapest colors. i would never recommend omni but i know nothing about omni plus. i previously had a diamont sysem here in my shop and after 8 years i got rid of the because even their prices were through the roof. i switched from diamont to wanda. less than half the cost, coverage is the same as diamont and its sprays exactly the same. i really couldn't tell the difference between the two. chad s here on the forum carries another line that people have been giving good feedback on and i know he ships to you.

I have considered SPI bases. I dont want a pure white I have heard some say its hard to look at in the sun. Maybe I can have it toned???

Im going to see if a local finishmaster store can give me a quote.. Thanks for the reply

Omni Plus is low grade collision repair type base. Not very good quality. PPG has gone insane on pricing in the Deltron Line. Jim like Wanda, I've only used it twice but like it as well. There are a lot of Distributors in your area so you can get it. Find them here:https://wandarefinish.us/distribution/
Motobase is the paint Jim C was referring to that member Chad S sells. Here is his site: http://www.autorodtechnologies.com/chads-paint-and-audio/ Both of those would be excellent economical options where you are not sacrificing quality, unlike with the Omni Plus.
Talk to Barry about the White. Maybe he can help.

Thanks a bunch.. I will follow up on those options

wanda is supported from your jobber only. this is why it is inexpensive and quality is still good. i am told it is basically the old sikkens autobase with a few solvent changes and without support from akzo. the color software is fine and is equal to the basf software i had prior. database is always updated automatically.

I am not a pro but will put my $.02 in. I have used both Wanda and Motobase (Automotive Art) and liked them a lot. Easy to spray and great coverage however Wanda mixes 2:1 (6 qts. RTS) whereas Motobase mixes 1:1 (8 qts. RTs) and for a low budget guy like myself that makes a big difference.
The color code matches on the Motobase have been spot on. When looking for a Subaru Blue Spruce Pearl for a custom '55 Chevy truck, most of the lines were trying to sell me a single gallon of color but they none of them matched. I had a friend run the color code on a high end paint and it came out as a Tri-stage paint however the price was about $1600 for that brand. Looked it up on the Automotive Art website and sure enough they too listed it as a Tri-stage so I had Chad get me a quote - it was half the price and matched perfectly plus it was shipped right to my door.

I use Standox. They have a way to choose alternates through the VIN. Not always right but a starting point.

Does anyone know if the SPI white base can be tinted? I assume it is a poly base like diamont. I have a local jobber that sells SPI and Diamont. Maybe they could tint it with the diamont toners. IDK just a thought,

yes you can tint the white to a point. white doesnt need much to make a big difference so if you are trying to take some of the brightness out of it then it will just require a touch of black and a touch of yellow oxide. i dont know how much polyester is in spi. prob not much if any but you can use a small amt of diamont to tint it. i have done it before.

Also look into Valspar solvent...outstanding in every aspect..

Removing my valspar this week. Everyone has different expectations but I've had adhesion problems and it is very difficult if you have to get back into it in a few days to a few weeks. I've not had any "peelers" but I've had two customers wreck their vehicles within a few months of a prior repair and they both peeled in sheets from where two sided tape was applied. Basecoat failure, there was base still on the vehicle and on the peeled clear. Color also doesn't always match the alternate chip because I don't think they are spray outs. Our jobber had a big push on Valspar in this area, he told me "everyone" was happy with it. When I called to tell him to pick it up, I had to be put on a list to when they could get to me because a good percentage of shops were pulling it.

Everyone has an opinion on paint and what one loves another hates. I like a polyester base over a urethane so I like the Diamont, Glassurit, Sikkens, over PPG. I don't dislike PPG but if the price is the same or close, I'm spraying a polyester base. They lay smoother, have superior metallic control and great adhesion. Downside, your prep better be good, because polyester lays slick and very low film build, it shows your prep.

Just got a quote on WANDA.
Gal. mixed B9A white $315 Straight WANDA white was $208 jobber said it would be close. IDK
Qt. of mixed Black $70.
A good bit cheaper than Diamont. @ $530
Leaning toward the WANDA as it seems the quality it there..
