Best sand paper

I've always used standard off the shelf a/o paper.

Should I be using the zirc or ceramic papers, typically blue or red respectively?

If so, suggestions on brand/model?

Norton blue fire seems to have good reviews.

I use different brands and grades depending upon what I am sanding.
Stripping paint and roughing in filler doesn't require high quality sandpaper, where block sanding primer and wet sanding clear do.

Norton Reserve is not to bad for the $. Just got a sample packs of Sunmight and will give a try. But like 68 Coronet I use different brands .

I like the 3M gold the best, but for the money,
the Bulldog gold is almost as good.
For clear sanding. the 3M purple disks are awsome.

i ahve been through many brands and types. norton, 3m, sunmight, eagle. up until a few months ago price vs performance, sunmight was the best. both their gold and green film. both are great. i recently tried the 3m blue line and i have to say that its priced really close to sunmight and i think it may be just a hair better. that is 1/2 ceramic 1/2 ao. for color sanding, eagle has been a winner for me for years. if cost is of no concern then anything 3m cubitron is going to be the top but i think only avail in coarser grits

Thanks for all the replies guys.

So basically this came up because I was doing some reading about some sand paper such as the AO, wearing out quick polishing metal instead of providing tooth. I've heard this before and follow up all this areas with physical sander scratches, by hand, if need be.

Basically just wanted to make sure I am using good product to avoid this.

Just recently started using Sunmight some. Green film sheet roll in 80 and 180 grits. It is far superior to the 3M gold sheet rolls in those grits. Lasts much longer and cuts better. Lower price too. You can get the 80 grit in huge 45 yard rolls for less than what 3M sells the 25 yard rolls of 80 grit for. And the film is tough enough to use on a long board file sander. Gonna try some of their finer grits soon.
One to stay away from is the 3M Red abrasives. Cheap stuff that doesn't last and doesn't cut as well as other paper.

I used to use the 3m gold or carbonundrum because both were available local. Recently switched blocking paper and DA paper to DuraGold. Much cheaper and works better to me. Im going to keep buying it

I think over the years I have tried them all. Sunmight is one I haven't heard of until now. May try it in the future but I have a few rolls of other brands in stock to use up first.

if you guys are looking for sunmight goto supergrit.com. they have the green rolls and gold and green discs. they are a buyout company so they dont have everything in every grit. their website sux and its hard to find stuff. you will have to chk their website and see what is avail currently. super cheap prices on it though. i think a box of 6" discs is like $17 vs my local jobber who can get it for me at i think $29 a box. been ordering from them for prob 5 years

1/2 way down the page, the green multi hole
bottom of page green film psa rolls

1/2 way down the page is the gold

i think the gold and green grit is exactly the same, its just the backings are different. both seem to cut the same and last just as long

Regarding SUNMIGHT...................Is the FILMBACKING (Green) vs PAPERBACKING (Gold) worth the extra $$$$$$

Is it the SAME Material Aluminum Oxide OR Ceramic OR Combination ???

IMO the film backing seems to cut longer. Tradeoff is that it's stiffer than regular paper backing.
For 80 I would suggest the green film. For finer grits either would be fine.

I use Klingspor for sanding wood and wood finishing. I have been using their blue and find it long lasting. They have a green film that I have used only to 500 that is great for sealer sanding. However, I haven't used these papers for autobody work as yet, and I am curious if anyone has any experience with it.

when i was buying gold sunmight there was only a $1 difference to go with the green. dont bother with any of the green film though. go for their purple ceramic. its fim also, same or similar price as green film and last way longer. only green film i use is the 1000 and 1500 for color sanding. all other grits are the ceramic. the green film rolls as said are a pia. you cant tear it. it works just fine but you need to cut it from the back side with a razor blade. i really prefer their gold on the rolls which seems to be hard to find, for me anyway. i end up using the 3m blue for psa rolls just because its easy to get. finishingfocus.com is great for sunmight.

Do you use the sunmight ceramic 3000 over the 2500 bufflex? How does it finish and remove 1500 scratches vs the bufflex

they dont make ceramic in those grits. 1000 and 1500 are green film then blue bufflex then 8000 trizact. the ceramic discs are for your regular sanding. 80-800 grit.
