Black basecoat.

Something i've always heard, but dont know if there is a lot truth to it...is that right after spraying black basecoat, that is the "blackest" that it will be. The longer it sits afterwords it starts to lose the "blackness" due to the amount of carbon drying out (or of that nature)...talking about basecoat here. any truth to this? or maybe its just true of older basecoats and not so much of them today??

Not true, ther carbon is going no where as it and the Phalo blue are wrapped like a gel tablet in the resin.

JB, question I was asked at show in Johnson City, TN yesterday, Is the Lesonal black as black as the Auto base Plus?

I have had my A++ handed to me for recommending the HofC black about 6 or 7 times now, as well a Andy and James have too but not sure how many they have had their bitt kicked, so thats the end of that, Something is up.

i see. never personally seen a difference in it after letting it sit which is why i always questioned it. It's my understanding that lesonal is pretty much the same formula as sikkens, just thinned down. Haven't used much lesonal base really so wouldn't know about the blacks. sikkens has a jet black that is more black than the 140 deep black tint. Only way you can really tell the difference is with one of those $100 sun lights. 140 is pretty deep.

What have people been saying about thr hok stuff?

Not going there, but its not doing what I use to know, it would do.

Not only the black but other things, I will now recommend only my intercoat or PPG's and for custom color only PPG glamor colors or Diamonts glamor colors.

Its has cost me a good amount of free material, to help out some people that had to redo jobs because, I was so stupid to recommend, last job I gave extra product to and said go buy PPG or Diamont black.

Thanks, JB.

Well i use hok very little anymore. The black is about the only thing i use just about daily. I have not seen any changes in it over the years or had any problems. It always been the blackest base i have found. Hok while they have many good products also have quite a few bad ones. The big irritation i have is over the years many of the bases have gotten more and more transparent and they lie straight through their teeth about it and other things. The amount of completely false info in their tech manual is astounding. Other than being more and more thinned out i have always thought their basecoat quality itself was great. Intercoat excluded.

Barry, i believe it's based off the old sikkens autobase.

I've never had any problems out of the hok bases. Hell their bases are cheaper than any sikkens base now...kinda unbelievable given that 5-6 years ago they were about the same...and before that hok was actually higher. ...but that's another story in itself. We've grown to like the rm line of candy's (and the other custom colors) over the hok...just so much more eaiser to work with than the hok urethane candies / base candys and they look pretty dang close. dont wanna turn this into a HOK bashing thread, but the products just dont seem like what they use to be years ago. Candies, Base, and Base candies and a few of their clears are the only thing i've ever used from them...glad i've never use the intercoat consindering what everyone has said.

As I understand it, when they bought Utech, they made the Utech base, auto base plus and the auto base was changed to lesonal.
Both are some very good chit!

Got to give them credit for not following the other majors and scraping up some discarded enamel and making it a base, for their low line brand.

I sure liked the Utech single stage back in the day, i did a old triumph with it.. Been a long time though.

I just used some of Chad's black base coat and from all indications its as black as the orginal GM black used on my 70 Chevelle SS. Great products from Chad and I've only used his base coats. Red, Silver and Black, all factory colors.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but you got the LY9B black. That's the audi color I have been suggesting, and getting really good feedback on it.

I'd have to check and see what the color code was for it Chad, but I believe that was it. It sure laid down good and it covered really good. By no means am I a pro when it comes to painting cars, but the results I've got from everyone's advice has been top notch. Never though I could get my car to look as good as it does. Thanks to Chad for the base and to Barry for all the other paint products and everyone else's advice. Universal Clear lays down slick for me.
