Bought a new Sata digital off Ebay, just confirming it is legit.

4000 B hvlp Digital.
I have read the old threads here on Sata fakes and have seen the YouTube video on the difference between a real one and the fake.

So here was my checklist :

Item came in an unopened box, with the hologram sticker intact. The scratch off SAL # was also not revealed.
- Scratched off the SAL # and checked it on the US Sata website. Sata confirmed it is a genuine Sata product.
- The colored ring near the tip is not anodized but a separate plastic piece. According to the YT video, the fake have anodized colored ring.
- The bottom of the handle has a blue plastic tab as part of the design. According to the YouTube video the fakes don't have this.
- The tip came protected with a red plastic cup/cap

So I am reasonably sure my Sata is real but being a total beginner to this profession and hvlp guns, I am just confirming. If the SAL # checks out on the Sata website, then that is enough? Or do the fakes manage to invent Serial # that have come back as real?

I doubt the fakers will go to a lot of work to make it look authentic. Fire it up and have fun.

Hard to fake a digital gun imho....

Don

You would be surprised just how far they will go. I was looking at Mitutoyo digital calipers and they even fake those and they are very convincing to the point of having to actually use them to find out they measure wrong. If they think they can make money at it they will make it. Now that's not to say they will perform as well or as long as the "REAL DEAL" but you would and could be hard pressed to tell by just looking unless you really know the unit inside and out.

Yeah can't wait . I am in a Autobody, chassis & Paint diploma program at my local technical college, here in Milwaukee Wi. We got some pretty nice facilities here ; 2 fully enclosed booths made by Garmat & 2 booths with curtains. Newest enclosed booth was installed only like a year or 2 ago.

Instructor mentioned something about setting up the Sata being a bit different than the Devilbiss, which is the brand 90% of the students are using.

Haven't read the gun's owner's manual yet. These guns are all pretty similar , as far as inlet air pressure goes , no matter the brand? If the Sata requires less than 30 psi, I won't be able to dial down the air pressure at the wall outlet , as I am not the only student who will be spraying. So can I just set the inlet pressure on the gun, using the digital readout, without needing a regulator? I don't have a regulator ; do I need one ?

Read the manual. The more personal effort you put into the education the more you'll learn. Remember, the tip and needle on those run bigger than advertised.

as far as this forum is concerned, if you did not buy it direct from SATA, or pay full price, it is a fake.

I'm assuming that is directed at me. :mad:You need to read what I wrote better. Not that you care though.

@kraftformer If the SAL checks out on the website it is 100% real. They don't make the fakes so good that you can't tell them apart anyway. Side by side the differences are obvious. Congrats on the gun.:)

What nozzle tip size is typically used for Base and Clear coat?
My gun came with a 1.4

1.2/1.3 usually for base and 1.3/1.4 for clear. There's been several posts about how the new SATAs are actually a step bigger than what is shown.

Follow Barry's gun set up and you'll get it figured out.

After spraying, playing & adjusting it to your style, shoot some spi clear & stand back in awe.
You're gonna love it. Don't overthink it.
