Can I Recoat Universal Clear

dale002

Newbie
I shot 4 heavy coats of universal clear in December and ended up with some dirt, two heavy sags and numerous small runs. I have blocked all of them down and I'm just finishing with cutting with 1500. My plan had beed to cut down to 3000 then buff, but with these issues, even thou I haven't broken through, I may be close to it in those areas. I'm afraid, I may break through during buffing or end up with not enough UV protection. Can I re coat with clear now after 6 months?

The Guru has spoken but for peace of mind it would be a good idea to go over the entire thing with a grey scotch-brite pad and some sanding paste.
It'll make sure like rdransman said that you have it all scuffed.
Scuff stuff is my favorite.

I looked at it earlier and I can see dusting of shinny clear here and there. when I look at it on an angle I can see some slight orange peelings had seen that already and was thinking it would clean up at 2000, but I'm now going to re coat it. I think that would be best and safer at this point. This a therapeutic project, no hurry.

Well.... bad news. I took the car out to give it a wash job in preparation for re clearing when I notice some areas where the paint sheen look differently. I read once that when the clear gets sanded through it can show as spots. One way to verify is to wipe it with water and see if the spot disappears, if it does, it's ok. If it remains, it's a sand through. I have a few of those spots and they remained when wet. The spots dries immediately and remains wet around them showing them even more. I laid 3 coats of solid base. It feels very smooth since it's blocked down to 1500:confused:

I think you will be setting yourself up for a disaster Dale. If you don't rebase the break through areas before you reclear they will show. It will be like it was when you wet the panel and you could see them. Unless you catylized the base, it very well may lift around the edges of the break through also.

You should be able to spot the break through area in with base where you broke through and the re-clear the whole panel. It should be ok to spot the break through areas in with clear before you recoat the rest of the panel if you were looking for a little more build but I don't think I personally would do that.

To be safe dust very light coats of base over the break through's, You do not want to spray wet heavy coats that will cause lifting if you are not careful. I broke through several times on my last project and dusted until it was covered, What color is your base?

White

Do not scuff it, or it will look just like you broke through the clear.

I mean scuffing the area where I broke through before applying a dusting of base, I plan to leave the rest of the clear on the car at 1500 and re clear the complete car. I just want to corrected it the right way and learn at the same time. The last time I shot paint, Regan was president and It was Dupont Imron.
