Classic Car Insurance Recommendations

Chris_Hamilton

Trying to be the best me, I can be
Any recommendations? Hagerty's? Grundy? I'm planning on insuring something in the not too distant future, value in the 50-75K range. Only really interested in an agreed value type of policy. Pretty sure I only want to deal with a specialist type company. Anyone care to share their thoughts or experiences?
Thanks.

Hi Chris. I'm in the same situation for my Spitfire. I intend to go with Hagerty's also with an agreed value policy. I don't have any personal experience, but on the Triumph forum that I visit (I'd put its quality up there with this forum) this question gets asked a few times a year and the overwhelming responses recommend Hagerty's.

Good luck!

P.S. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of car?

If anyone wants to insure a project car/cars, that has to be spelled out because some of these type companies don't cover projects.
Hagerty does. My 51 Ford F1 was covered for the 4 years it was under construction. My 64 Studebaker Avanti has been insured under construction since I bought it 4 years ago.

Both are agreed value.

I had Hagerty throughout my build, I had the value set lower and raised as needed. Since the agreed value was low naturally the premium was lower. When it came time to put a number to a finished truck I ended up valuing it higher. With the higher value and the fact that its "modified" Hagerty was around $600 a year more than Grundy. I ended up with Grundy for that reason, Ive read both good and bad reviews about both, and my experiences with both have been fine for the little bit Ive talked to either of them.

Thanks for the replies Gents. Been leaning towards Hagerty's. Anyone ever file a claim with their Insurance? One reason I've leaned toward Hagerty's is that they have Adjusters who specialize in Classics. Whether on staff or freelancers. Having an adjuster who understands Classics and how things are different when repairing a Classic versus a late model makes a big difference. Some of the lesser known companies doing it employ the same stupid adjusters I used to deal with doing Insurance work. Working with those folks you are going to come up on the short end of the stick 10 out of 10 times.

That's actually an area I would like to be able to specialize (collision repair of classics) in when I get my Shop built as I think that would be a pretty decent niche being in the Mid Atlantic area.

P.S. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of car?

It's an early 240Z that is getting a complete restoration. Not back to 100% original but more of a Japanese resto mod style. Watanabe RS wheels, Stroked L6 motor, triple carbs. Lots of other custom type things that have been in my head for the last 20+ years. Going to finish it to the highest degree my skillset will allow. No stupid fender flares though. Would like to earn a Gold class award at the National ZCar Show whenever I do get it done. Doing it like I wanted to do the first one I had but didn't have the skills, tools or money then.
I'll post a build thread here and other places later this Summer. Have started working on it but am waiting awhile before I start any build threads. I am being disciplined at taking pics though.:)

Chris I have Hagerty I filed a claim with them in 2018. And yes i do some ins work with a few of the collector car ins co's,PM me and I will tell you what I know about them.

Grundy and Hagerty are great for taking care of the customer.
I personally never have had a claim but talk to shops and customers who have.
A friend Chevelle was totaled by a driver crossing the yellow line, and he had a big check inside of a week with 0 BS. Gundry ins.

Haverty has a body shop list as 1 and 2,
One is preferred and has to do with the shop insurance.
You may want to get on the list if your a shop, like one shop told me fixing a car for Hagerty with no bs or cutting costs made me want to kill the a...te adjuster next time he comes in.

Another case a Haggerty customer was not at fault, another adjuster was being a jerk, and Haggerty said they were taking over this claim.

Also, Haggerty has its own parts guy; he sources all your parts and ships to your shop.

Just renewed wifes bird.

Whichever one you choose make sure you understand the driving restrictions. They seem to vary quite a lot.

Don

If I get it the way I want it I'm going to be too scared to drive it :eek:so at least for a while the driving restrictions won't be an issue.:)

I have been the repair shop for quite a few classic car damage claims in the last forty years. Most of the companies that insure classic cars do a good job of settling their claims. The company I choose to insure my own cars has been Haggerty. ~BOB

I used to have hagerty for several cars over the last 15yrs. Now they have steered away from cars with modified suspension. Mainly hydraulics, lowriders. They require low jack (are they even still in business??) And garaged parking. Recently ive had good experience with american collectors insurance. Stated values. Couple pictures. And they dont care if the car is modified. Ive only had to make 1 insurance claim in the last 25 yrs. I actually need to insure my 64 and 61 here soon. I can update when i do.

I called and got a policy over the phone with american collectors. Was easy. Just had to send 1 picture of the car. Paid over the phone. Policy and card emailed. And done.
