Clear over Single Stage Questions

What are the pros/cons of spraying clear coat over SS Black blocked down with 1000 wet sanding vs spraying Universal Clear over the SS Black within 24 hours not sanded? Is there any color or gloss loss? Any issues with 1000 wet sanding SS Black then spraying Universal Clear over that?

if the ss sits more than maybe 12hrs this time of year i would say you had better sand it. i personally would not wait that long. i would give it an hour then just clear it if you dont want to sand. if you do let it cure say 24 hrs then you need to sand, i wouldnt be sanding with 1000 either. imo its too fine. i would do 600 or 800.

Guess I'm wondering "why?" spray clear over SS?

I remember a lengthy and helpful thread on the merits of SS vs. BC, but that seems like a different topic.
From everything I've picked up here, if I have understood it correctly, if I were doing a solid color, I would use SS and then cut/buff it with no clear.

Adds more depth plus more protection and ability to get it smooth as glass. In relation to the question, I was thinking 800 grit but didn’t want any scratches showing through in the sun.

I won't spray clear over sanded SS anymore because I have done test panels that have shown color variation due to pigments in the SS being disturbed by sanding. The cleared SS jobs I have done were accomplished by clearing the SS directly after a long flash, then waiting a few days before sanding and re-clearing the clear. Not everyone believes this is necessary or best, though. YMMV.

it does give the benefits of a bc/cc job with added durability. boat and yacht paint systems that the paint companies actually call bc/cc are actually ss for color with clear over. other than the custom jobs on the go fast boats, you will never see an automotive style basecoat to paint a boat hull.

This is why I asked and was afraid of something like this. I did a quick test panel before to see how it would look but a quick test panel with a quick stripe is different than a whole car. Thanks for adding to the thread.

Sometimes there can be a question of compatibility between the SS and the clear, but what I have found is that as long as the clear going on top flashes the same or slower than the SS, there shouldn't be any appearance problems.

This is single stage- 4 coats + 4 Coats UV. Sanding the SS with 600. I actually did some test panel spray outs comparing SS/ CC vs BC/CC and the SS/CC was noticeably deeper/darker.
