Color match

I saw a new Camaro some time back.I thought the 1/4 panel had been painted and thought who could get by with that ? The color was way off. Since then I have seen a red, orange and a silver.the doors and 1/4s are not even close to the same color. Guess if you do repairs the whole side would have to be painted?

We did one at work a while back. By the time they were done, the whole car had been repainted. The panels did not match before we got it.

Crash... in that case I don't know for sure if it was the shop or the insurance company. I think the shop probably ate that one, but not sure. I noticed the color as soon as they pulled it inside, and told the manager. I was told that it was the lighting in the shop, as that is their answer for any color differences. Once they were done and pulled the car outside, it was too late.

Hey.... What do I know, I'm just a bodyman? LOL

Put z06 quarter panels on a c6 convertible a while back...had to blend onto the doors and rear bumper...burnt orange metallic color. I set the bumper off at the rear of the car in the booth at the same angle as it would be on the car...all paint came from the same cup. After painting and installing the bumper, it was darker than the quarters. Amazong how the paint lays differently on different materials. Fiberglass vs Urethane. It wasn't EXTREMELY noticeable, but i could tell. I had it grounded and prepped with an antistatic degreaser.

Sometimes it seems like nothing will work, I've repainted complete sides before because
of one panel not blending in. Some colors really fight you.
Most times it's the "flop" of the paint that gets me.
I still haven't figured out how to control the "flop"

Flattener lightens the flop without drastic changes to the face. White pearl can do the same, and a bit of straight white can help as a last resort, though it will lighten the face, too.

The only time I've seen that happen is when there is temperature differences, the plastic heats and cools at a different rate than the smc. Usually if both materials are sealed and the temps are stabilized then you won't have any difference in color if the paint is applied the same. Years ago is was common to shoot the bumpers on the cars during complete repaints and they almost always matched unless it was a rush job and the temps were screwed up-and then you could see the bumper flashing faster than the car.

The new camaro has a radical angle change between the quarter and door that really plays havoc with what you see for colormatch.

I know a guy that worked at a factory in the paint div. He said that cars were always getting damaged on the line so the car would be brought to them to be hand painted. Maybe that is what is happening. Robot-v-Human.
