Early 70's spatter paint?

Did a search on it and found a couple threads but beings they're 10 years old or so I figured I'd ask.

Anyone shot trunk spatter paint recently? Looking at a gray / leaning torwards black for a early 70's Chevy. I know there's GM, Zolatone and the typical puff cans.
Wanting to get a stock look even though the car is no longer original. I've got a old siphon gun with I believe is a 2.0 tip that might work ok for it.
The trunk pan, drops, outer wheelhouses and quarters have been replaced and the insides were primed with 2k black. Pic of one of the original trunk plugs.
Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks
John

Thanks 68, You were on the post I was reading. Do you know how well it held up?

I know Bob mentioned shooting a black and then a white spatter over that.

I've never shot the stuff myself.

I've used this stuff in the past. Gave an authentic (IMO) look. Your plug looked like it was black and aqua so this stuff would work. Uncleared Zolotone in the correct color would look authentic as well.

We spray spatter trunk paint with base clear. The black with aqua spots is done like this. First we spray the dark gray base coat. Then we take the spray cap off (that's right no cap) of a GTI gun and at about 50lbs air it will spray nice spots. finish up with matt clear. With a little practice you can make it look original and it holds up better than the original and easier to clean too.

I was reading where someone did something similar with adding a coat of matt clear but pulling the cap off would make things interesting!! I think I have a unopen qt of matt clear, might try that on a test panel.

I used Black and white SPI Epoxy. I probably should gave experimented with the size of the spatter more, but I was happy with the way it turned out. I wasn’t concerned about it looking original. I just wanted something that was tough.

I just realized the pics I posted look blotchy. That is actually a reflection. I suck worse at taking pics than I do at spraying epoxy.

The spatter paint finally showed up and I shot it this morning after spending a day curled up in the trunk sanding with 180,, then a vacuum, then wiping it down with W&G and taping it off. Couldn't stand up straight for another day.
It turned out ok, better than it was that's for sure. It leans more toward gray than black. It has to cure for 16-24 hrs before any clear can going on.
I do have a qt of matt clear but it's over 3 years old, never open until tonight. It had seperated but mixed up ok.
Question is should it be used or don't chance it and just get another qt?

Thanks
John
Couple of pics. Lighting's not the best.

I would probably take a chance with the clear, but if the activator is three years old as well then you need to at least get new activator. Or mix some and do a test panel. If it goes on and sets up/cures OK then it will be OK. Just do it within a day or two of the test to be safe.

Thanks guys!!
Chris, the clear ( 2200-4, 4:1 ) is more like 5 years old....time flies when you're having fun. Activator that came with is 2102-4 and is unopen. The activator I was going to use with it is 4003-4 also unopen, 4 months old.

MJM, I used an old (1978) pos siphon/pressure pot gun, it had a 1.6 tip in it...I drilled it out to 2.0. Probably should of gone up to 2.2 but I don't think the needle would of seated after that. :) I need another gun.

Thanks
John

"Probably" will be OK. Mix it really well. More than once. Do a test panel to verify before using it on the car.

The trunk looks good BTW.:) Interesting that yours was more grey than black as the last time I used some of that product (several years ago) it was more black than grey....who knows.

i have done many things over the years with the splatter effect. as long as you have a good regulator you can just dial down the pressure to just a couple psi until you get the size droplets you want. i have never tried taking the air cap off. that sound interesting.

Thanks Chris, I'm setting up for a test now...It called out for 50-60 psi on the 1st coat and then lower it to 25-30 for the 2nd and I pulled the cap off. At the lower pressure I wasn't able to get anything out of the old gun so I put the cap back on and shot the 2nd at about 40-45psi. Don't know if that has anything to do with it but oh well. Stuff was thick, like gear lube thick. Probably would of been better out of a gravity fed gun with a larger tip. Try a different gun on the next one.

Thanks again for the help!!
John

I ran a test with the matte clear yesterday and it set up ok so I went ahead and sprayed it.
I mixed it several times and it worked out pretty good, it also darkened it up some. The gloss level is a little higher than I wanted but as others mentioned it will hold up better and easier to clean. Put it out in the sun for a while today

Thanks
John

Does this trunk spatter need to be cleared, or did you do that just for extra protection? I am about to order some for a current project.
