Epoxy as top coat.

Hey guys just wanted to get some input on what I'm doing. I've got a 72 nova painted butternut yellow and I'm painting all the chrome/ stainless trim and bumpers satin blk. I've painted everything with blk epoxy and I'm wanting to just leave it alone because it really looks good, but I wanted to get some input especially on the bumpers. Everything I've painted turned out very nice. I've talked to Barry about this and he's told me it will be fine just the way it is but I'm one of those people that need more info that this will be ok.

only if its SPI epoxy, he made additions to lightfastness that nobody else has. Otherwise expect charcoal gray powder by this time next year.

I had once asked Barry if I could clear coat the SPI epoxy primer and never received an answer?, Barry can we consider clear coat over SPI epoxy primer for areas like engine compartment or underside of car?

I'm sorry I didn't mention it is SPI epoxy. The whole car inside / outside and underneath this 2 coats of spi epoxy on it so I know how good this stuff is.

Is there any way we can tell what batch our can is from? I think I got a gallon of black, right around the time that these changes were made. I made some bumpers for my truck and just left them in black epoxy. It's been a little over a year I think, and they're turning chalky. I could be mistaken in that I had the epoxy before the changes were made, but since we're on the subject I thought I'd ask if there was a way to tell by looking at the can.

barry said it would be fine and that's not good enough for you ? why are you even asking .

exactly, Do you know who Barry is? he would never mislead you, ever.

I believe there's a date code on the can. I had some old and called Barry and it didn't have the uv additive so I bought some new to do what doing.

Parts look good! I like the shine of the epoxy!
I know others with uncovered epoxy that is holding up just fine after a year, and they see more sun than your car will. Barry is the straightest shooter out there and he is as honest as they come. If he said its good it will last longer than you think.

Hey guys thanks for all the info. If anybody wondering I'm leaving them in epoxy. The cars going to be parked in a garage and covered up plus it's a weekend cruiser.

That epoxy will last a long time especially if it's just a cruiser and garage kept. I have a few examples that sit outside all year long that have held up just fine.

Yes you can clear over epoxy-no problem

I would think the SPI Epoxy would have the same issues as other satin finish. If you clean a bug off it, does it leave a shinny spot behind? Sanding out a run, same thing?

I agree. ITs fine if people want to use it, but Barry added this UV protector into it because painters were using it to put flat black stripes on cars. Just does not make alot of sense to me to use it as a topcoat.

I get that, I was just curious if it would have the same cons as a flat or satin finish as top coats.
