Epoxy over DBC Base

Need to know if I can spray some epoxy over DBC base? Shot base yesterday but I have sanding scratches showing through and need to rework a few areas. Do I need to sand the base completely off or will the epoxy go over it with no problem?

Thanks, Jim

ya it will go over it. but i wouldnt do it. what needs to be reworked? sand the scratches out in the base feather past and spot primer.

Thanks sik for the quick reply. The problem is on the inside bed wall of a pickup truck. I just needed a direction to head in

What are you trying to get done and why over the base? I wet coat will work great if you do need it but would then let set over night.

The problem is that I thought everything was sanded smooth and it wasn't. When I shot the base these areas showed up. I now need to go back and re-sand these areas. My thought was to just shoot a coat of epoxy over the bad areas and then sand out and re-base.

I don't know, depending on the severity of the problem, we might wetsand a bit and shoot a bit of intercoat over it (or even a coat of base) to see how it's going. Epoxy is pretty slow, and if you miss something, it will be quite a while before you can sand again.

Thanks crash, but I have plenty of time so shooting epoxy is no problem.

At one coat, I would rather see the base wet sanded smooth, even though you will get back into primer, just saves a lot of loading of different materials.

That makes sense to me. I don't have that much area to sand off. Thanks

I did not mean just sand off but was thinking of sanding the base with 400-100 and use the base as a primer to get rid of scratches, unless its so bad you need a primer??

Thats kinda what I had in mind. If I can't get rid of the scratch marks then I will use primer like sik suggested. I just didn't know if the epoxy/primer would lift the base. Sometimes all these chemicals don't like each other.

Thanks, Jim

I think the reluctance to use primer at that stage comes from the fact that 99% of defects that make it all the way to the basecoat stage will be handled easily with some wet sanding, or at worst, a tiny wipe of poly putty, wet sanding, and a spot of sealer.

I don't think I have ever gone back to primer once a job has basecoat on it, then again I don't remember everything like I used to.

i have when ive had parts sitting in basecoat that i was airbrushing and doing graphics on, and accidently dropped or did something to, where i had to fix and spot prime.

if ur going to primer over the base. at the least, spray another coat of base, or take dbc 500 and put acitvator in it. so the top layer is activated. might seem redudent, but it would make me feel better.

but then again, what about clearing it, letting it cure a little, then sanding, and rebasing-reclearing.

Thanks everybody for the help. I have already sanded all the defects out. I will spot prime the areas. that need it and then re-base the panel.
