Epoxy primer as a sealer

My 78 Camaro has 2 different colors of rattle can primer on it, red & gray, also has some of the OEM gold paint still on it also.I wasn't planing on taking it down to bare metal because their isn't any thing coming thru the the paint an primer. Some of the primer has been on it for 3 or 4 yrs. I was planning on going over it with 320 grit then 400,then spraying SPI epoxy primer as a sealer, 2 coats. Then a coat of primer over the epoxy.Do you think this will cover the OEM gold & red, gray primer well enough to start spraying base coat? One other question, I'm planing on spraying the door jams, inside of the doors & inner trunk lid with a 50/50 mix of base & clear,do I add the amount of activator for the amount of paint then for clear or the total of what I have in the cup, paint an clear mixed together.

1 part ready to spray clear + 1 part ready to spray color is what most people do. Activate and reduce each component as normal then mix them together, no need for the shot of activator in the basecoat. Epoxy+urethane primer then a sanding and reseal with epoxy before paint-will work but the job will only last as long as the products that are already on the car.

nothing personal, but youre most likely wasting your time and $ spraying over old rattle can paint. there may be things going on under the paint you cant see yet. try the tape test. put some duct tape on the rattle canned surface and pull it off, if the paint comes off thats eventually what will happen... even then i wouldnt paint over it but at least that might help you decide.

Thanks, that something I'll do.I've been welding in some patch panels and didn't want to leave unexposed metal for a month or two.I've been doing body work on it for a few years so some of the primer is that old also. I hate doing body work, but its just to ulgy to drive. This will be my first time painting.

just spray some epoxy on the clean bare metal, you can even roll it cause its gonna get blocked out anyway... if you put all that work over rattle can youll eventually have more to remove or it will be harder to sell with a bad paintjob...believe me i know...:)
rattle can isnt waterproof...

Man I can definitely attest to this. Before I came to this site I had a small area on my car that I sanded down to bare metal. I then sprayed some white Krylon primer on that spot and forgot about it thinking it was OK. After my enlightenment here I was DAng the whole car down to bare metal getting it ready for epoxy, when I hit that primer spot there was rust underneath. I should have taken pics...
