Euro with Polar

Temps are a little cool here in NY. Is there any issues I could be looking at if I mix euro 4:1:2 with medium activator and reducer with 1-2oz of polar? Or will the medium reducer and activator cause issues? Do I need to use fast with polar or is my thinking off? Thanks!

I shot euro with fast red and med act today and just a little dribble of polar in a qt. Maybe 1/3 oz. Its all you need. It cured almost too fast even for the small items i was spraying. It also lost a little gloss. Not much but just enough to notice. Nothing that wouldnt come back with a little buffing but if you just wanted to spray and be done i would not use polar.

Oh wow didn’t think it would hurt the gloss that much. I’m sure I’ll have to nib the parts but not looking to do a full cut and buff if I don’t have to.

I've always been told that Polar should not cause loss of gloss but it will for me, at least sometimes. It's kind of a crapshoot. Typically I will use fast activator in Euro in cool temps, and no Polar at all. That's a better bet for gloss retention, imo.

P.S. I never use straight fast reducer in clear, since the coldest surface temp I will paint in is 65 degrees. I keep a 50/50 blend of 860 and 870 on hand during the winter. Too fast of reducer can cause appearance problems, imo.

Hmm, just trying to get something to cure quicker in this cooler weather. But I don’t want dieback either. I remember back in the day I used a speed clear from transtar maybe? Looked absolutely beautiful that night. Came back the next morning not so much lol. Maybe time to try spi speed clear? Polar is a lot cheaper though lol.

havent really had that issue with universal but a little with euro. the speed clear is good, i spray a ton of it but you need to get used to it. its a bit strange how you have to spray with no flash. if you let it flash too long it pops which is completely opposite to how normal clears work. i dont get it. also keep in mind its a 2 coat only clear but if your not buffing then that doesnt matter. spray 2 coats and walk away.

SPI Speed Clear is excellent. I think it is the most expensive per sprayable ounce, but is worth it in particular scenarios.

Yeah I was looking at that…pretty pricey. But still not bad when compared to the majors I suppose. $50 a sprayable qt. Yeah I would just be using it for panel work, used car work, etc. I guess if your creative you can do some larger work. The old transtar speed clear I was talking about was the same way 2 coats no flash. Was hard to wrap my head around lol. Like I said sprayed great, looked perfect that night. But next morning she died back like crazy. Never used it again.

yes and i abuse it by doing 4 coats with it. i sand and buff it within 48 hours and i see no loss of gloss down the road.

Yeah, Speed Clear stays shiny. It's nice. Drawbacks to me are price, and the fact that I have had to keep a journal on how much it takes to paint certain things. Since there is no time to make more if you run out in the middle of the second coat, the tendency is to overmix and that gets costly.

Jim how are you getting away with 4 coats? And crash, yeah I can see what you mean. Almost better to mix extra but it’s also waste. But better than the alternative.

i cant do it in the summer months when the heat and humidity are high. i have to go to accelerated universal clear. the rest of the 8 mos or so i can do 4 coats by spraying 2 coats no flash as usual then i let sit 1/2 hour then do another 2 coats same as first.
