Factory Primer Colors?

The more I read about primer colors based on finish paint, color the more I wonder about my two trucks,
My 85 Chevy truck is from the factory, white with black primer, and my 78 is a black truck with orange primer.
Did they just have one color primer in the paint line for all the trucks, or is there a reason for this?
Sorry for the foolish question, but somethings just make me wonder.

Sadly back then there was really no consistency when it came to the paint. They were all over the map using different companies and that would explain the different colors. I recall in the mid-80s GM had a huge problem with delamination on their trucks and the base coat was just coming on the scene. the paint film on the trucks was very thin and they were a single stage. Not a good time for paint for any of the big three carmakers.

A lot of the older trucks had more than one color primer on the same truck! I don't believe there was a thought given to primer color back then. They were all getting enamel, and it covered fairly well.

Texas you are right My wife's grandfather worked at GM Baltimore trunk plant and said the same thing about the primer
