Fiberglass prep

The car I'm working on has a glass hood that was painted with a rattle can years ago. I've media blasted the car and have read about prepping the bare steel for primer, but what should be done to this hood? I'm worried about being to aggressive when sanding it because I assume it has some sort of gel coat on it. So how should old fiberglass be prepped before primer?

What kind of media was used to strip the hood? Does the hood fit well-this would be the time to correct any fit problems before primer is applied. Make sure all of the rattle can primer is removed-hopefully it wasn't rustoleum. Once the hood is sanded well (180 grit would be my choice) clean it with waterborne wax and grease remover, let it breathe for a half hour and shoot two coats of epoxy primer. The epoxy when fully cured will make a nice solvent barrier to seal up that old glass.

I bought this hood new about 15 yrs ago. It had a white coating on it and I sprayed it black. I cant remember what paint it was but it was from a spray can. Its in good shape except the corners are a little chewed up from being stood up in the garage. It fits well but I just need to get this paint off and get it covered in epoxy. I was concerned about sanding thru that coating that was on it when I got it. But you think I'd be ok sanding it with 180 just enough to remove the black paint?

you'll rarely ever break through the gel coat with 180-and if you do break through a little bit it won't hurt a thing. Just remember to sand all areas for good primer adhesion.

Rattlecan paint will usually wipe off with acetone and some rags. Might want to try it real quick before you spend a bunch of time sanding.
