Filter System Recommendation for Beginner

I am looking to lay down some SPI Epoxy Primer on the 280z shell and what do you know, it isn't as simple as hooking up a gun to a compressor then spraying away.

I will be using a 5 HP IR 60 Gallon and a Devilbiss FLG4

After seeing some 37 stage (joking) set ups it seems you can never run out of places to spend your money.

I am trying to keep the expenses down but still be able to lay down my primer. Preferably under $400. I would always be willing to expand in the future but not with my current garage situation.

I did see this Arrow desiccant you guys mentioned which seems like a great bet. Would you go with this and purchase the additional filter? or just go for a 3 stage kit? Which other filters would you suggest?

Dessicant is the final stage of a three stage filtration system. Water coalescer is the first, oil/ aerosol coalescer is the second. Regulator would be placed after the filters.
Check out the Devilbiss CamAir 2 stage system. It includes a regulator as well. You can the add the dessicant filter after the water and oil filters
Here is a pic.

That’s pretty simple I like it. Would you say a water/oil separator like this is pointless? I bought it about a year ago and just remembered I have it.

I also saw this digital gauge being recommended. Should I just use this money towards the camair 2 or would you say this is a difference maker.

Definite no on the first link. As for the digital gauge, that would be up to you. I don't use one but I have been doing this for a long time. Knowing your air pressure at the gun is nice but not absolutely necessary. I'm probably not the one to ask, as to the value of it as I don't use them. I adjust the pressure till its atomizing nicely.

Fair enough. I’ll definitely be going with that setup thanks.

I'll probably get crucified but here is my setup. My shit is old beat up and abused.. probably half a dozen epoxied holes. Lol. I run the motoguard unit just for peace of mind. Soon I'm going to replace it all.

If it works it works lol. I have seen mentioned the motor guard unit multiple times. Dont completely understand it’s purpose. Is it just another redundant filter hoping to catch whatever was missed by the 3 stage? Might get one but later down the road.

OJ…Your in a cold climate like me. And a “home built” setup. How are you keeping your place warm enough while sucking on fresh air for ventilation. I’ve always used a kerosene torpedo heater to supplement. Wondering if there’s and quieter and less “oily” ways. That are practical of course. I’ve thought about electrical hanging heated where my fresh air comes in, or IR lamp setup near panels I’m spraying, etc. just don’t wanna spend $ and not get results. Maybe I should not fix what isn’t broken. Anyone else use kerosene torpedo heaters while spraying?

I use a propane torpedo heater while spraying.

Ya, Like i said the dad500 setup is quite old and there may have been times where the media was left in there a bit longer than it should have and the little screen at the output side got a small piece of damage....Now this probably happened on a Thursday night and I put the motoguard deal on there because it was available for the weekend of work. I got so used to it being there I ended up upgrading it to the 1/2" model when I was battling some other issues. Regardless, it works great and clean air is the one less thing I worry about now. Now that there are systems out there that are relatively affordable I will be replacing it shortly when I am all caught up.

As far as heat goes, Here is my setup. I run a radiant heater above my paint area. When the curtain is pulled to close off the paint area and the intake and exhaust fans on itll still keep that area about 75 or so. I paint at night so if I know its gonna be cold, Ill crank the heat up while im at work during the day. Also, those fly traps I have hanging are awesome...I highly recommend them.

And then I have another on the other side for when it gets really cold. But I try not to paint when its frigid unless its something small.

Ya its one of those things that when it springs a leak I am like "Aww shit, time to finally get off my wallet and replace it".......but since its 10 at night Ill just dab a little bit of this on there and worry about it later. Then I end up forgetting about it until a conversation like this comes up!

How many feet of copper or galvanized pipe do you have to condense the water, which should then be collected in pipe drops before the filters?
I have read I would need between 25-50 ft so I will be trying to get that number. I will need to do a straight up and down route.

I have got the DAD set-up also but luckily no leaks yet. (It's about 18 years old.) What exactly are you guys using to seal the holes up with?

I'll try flex seal next time!

Here is a live image of me fixing my 25 year old filter setup:

Edit: I honestly have no idea how old this filter is. I bought it for pennies like 10 years ago and then it looked like it was already 100 years old, lol

I would use two of these one at compressor and one at the gun, and get a new hose. Put a new small filter coming out of the compressor. Just as a back up or third stage of protection I would get the orange ball put on your gun.
