Have experience in furniture finishing but not automotive painting. Internet can be useful and overwhelming. Have a 66 corvette going to paint silver.vette forumshighly recommen SPI products, but have not seen any colors except white black and reds.was planning on using either evercoat slick sand then sealer and single stage, but have been advised against.also looked at clausen all u need instead of slick sand. If use base clear what base should I use and which clear. I feel I can do it but want science on my side. I have read several posts here and seem real thanks

Silver is a tough color for a first paint project. Single stage metallics can be a nightmare because you can’t cut and buff them. Clausen All U Need is a great product and is used by a lot of Corvette restoration shops. You can buy base from any number of companies and use SPI clear. PPG DBC is a decent base but pricey. Universal or Euro SPI clears are good options. Make sure to use SPI epoxy as your first primer and also reduced as a sealer before base.

As for base coats in colors SPI doesn't carry I personally use Automotive Art Motobase LV. Mixes 1:1 and sprays and covers great.

Silver metallic can be tricky but if you practice consistency in application (distance, overlap, speed, angle, number of coats, etc.) it will turn out fine.

In my opinion a base coat clear coat scenario is easier for a beginner than a single stage paint. You can look at your base coat before applying the clear and fix any problems.

Thanks for all the replies! A lot more reading and I am sure more questions. Will see if I can figure how to post pic.

More questions! Doors are off vette to replace hinge bushings and door frame rivets. I am sanding door jambs and have them smooth. There seems to be original silver then what looks like goodwood green then white and marina blue topped off with black primer that was on whole car. Car is sanded to glass no real rough spots so was thinking on high build primer instead of a poly primer. BUT when I had jambs smooth ( primer, blue ,white some green partially sanded off) I went to wipe down area with clean cloth and acetone. The green sort of dissolved and got gummy until acetone evaporate. Can this be sealed and painted over? Not looking forward to getting all paint off in this pita area.

Going to work on jambs with red scotch pad will remove all I can get.
