Fisheye issue

I tried respraying the clear on my door today and had fisheye problems. I had a couple fisheyes in the previous clear, so thought I'd try using some W&G remover. I used Refinisher's Select RSG 260-1 silicone, wax and grease remover. I don't normally use it and shouldn't have this time. I did it last night and washed it with a mild solution of dawn, but maybe too mild. I use only a couple tablespoons in a bucket of water, should it be stronger? I scrubbed the door with a white scotch brite and the dawn and dried with a clean towel, but still got a lot of small fisheyes.......I don't get it. I painted the fenders last week and got none, although I didn't use the W&G remover. If I sand this down again and wash with Dawn only, are they likely to show up in the redo?
Thanks,
Bill

Is that a solvent based wax and grease remover? A better choice might have been SPI water based wax and grease remover. I am not sure it is a good idea to rub water and Dawn into your finish with a scotch brite pad. This should not be necessary.

Why are you using non SPI products? :D

Are you using clear coat activator that may have absorbed moisture? That is a good way to get fish eyes...

I'm not sure if it's water based or solvent based. Smells like solvent base. (I'm a pretty amateur painter) doing in my garage booth at home. I can't find anything on it online. SPI isn't so easy to get up here. I'm on an Island off the west coast of Canada. I'm using HOK base/clear and have painted the whole car without any trouble. Its only on this respray of one door that I'm having these fisheyes, and it's the only part I've used the W&G remover. The activator was new today and still had the seal on it. The white scotch brite is very mild and I didn't think it would bother the clearcoat that I was going over. The rest of the car has turned out like this photo.

I can only tell you that I would never use a solvent based wax and grease remover nor scrub water and Dawn into a panel prior to spraying clear coat. I would use a water (alcohol) based wax and grease remover and wait several hours. Perhaps one of the other guys will weigh in.

Yes, you're likely right. I did wait about 12 hours between washing and painting, but I won't be using that W&G remover again. What is the SPI cleaner called?

I sell SPI in BC, I've shipped stuff to Duncan, Port Alberni, Victoria, the shipping is not that expensive. Let me know if I can be of help.

I had another thought........maybe it wasn't the wax and grease remover. I was in the middle of polishing this door, when I decided to re-clear it, so had polished the whole door with the 3M #1 polish. It had a good shine on it, but went through in a small area, so I washed off the polish with Dawn and water and resanded the whole door to 800. Could it be polish residue in the clear that may have caused this? Its riddled with small fisheyes over the whole door. If it was that, how can I be sure it won't come back in the next go round?

likely the fillers in the 3m . wash the door several times with the solvent cleaner . the dawn is my main cleaner but to strip wax i go to a solvent cleaner.
switch to chemical guys compounds and this problem will go away .

Thanks Shine. I wonder if their compounds are available in Canada? I'll wash it with the solvent borne cleaner a few times, before sanding, then sand it again ready for clear and wash it with the SPI cleaner and try again. I was under the impression that the 3M compounds didn't have any silicones or waxes, but something sure made a problem.

they are in cal but have no idea.
i just dislike anything 3m . but something was melted by the cleaner and redistributed . no other reason except water in lines. send me an email and i'll try to help.

I quit using wax and grease remover many years ago.
Before doing any body work I scrub the area with a wet gray or red scuff pad
and a squirt of Dawn directly on the pad. I scrub the area and rinse, then dry with a clean towel.
I do the same thing after my final primer sanding.
I haven't had a single fish eye since I started doing this,
even on waxed cars.
Washing rinses it all away. Much more thorough.

I hadn't used it for a long time either, but made the mistake of using it this time, but my real problem was that I had polished the clear first and sanded the finish before cleaning. I never thought of using the Dawn undiluted, but it seems like that would give it its best shot.

Jorge, were you going to send me a credit card form so I can order the SPI cleaner? Thanks, Bill

Just got home an hour ago, I have the 700-1 packed ready to go, will print out shipping labels in the morning and drop it with Purolator.

Will send you an invoice link after you get the order. This Monday was unusually busy.

Thanks for your patience, Bill.

I received my cleaner from Jorge today, so if anyone in BC is looking for SPI products, Jorge in the man! Thanks for the quick shipping Jorge.
