Gold Leafing

After a week away from the sanding and painting I do feel much better. I think some amount of the dust went in my nose and was irritating my throat through drainage. I felt a clump of something pass through my sinus cavity a few days ago... I have always been closely shaved and wearing a mask while I sand so I am not sure how that got in there...but I am going to invest in a barrel fan to pull air away from me while I work.

Long overdue update. After some trouble with a bad harbor freight hose, I managed to lay down the paint and do the gold leafing. My process was;

Polyester primer
SPI epoxy
3 coats SPI black
3 coats SPI Universal clear
sanded with 800 for gold leaf
3 more coats of clear

Huge thanks to Barry and the team at SPI. I couldn't be happier with the result. It looks crazy in the sunlight! I am just cutting it now with some rupes compound.

What are your guys thoughts on clear bra? The car has been curing for 3 months and it will probably sit at least 3 more.

Hi guys, I would like some advice. I do custom bicycle paint work and am getting into gold leaf. I’ve done one or two jobs after some testing and use an acrylic size which I found locally but this stuff does not have great adhesion. I apply it directly onto basecoat which has vinyl stencils applied to it for the lettering of the bike. I’m worried that if I were to do a bike where large surfaces are done in leaf, the leaf together with the clear coat would scrape off too easily if it gets a bump or scratch.

From what I’ve read, you guys use oil based size(Dux) followed up by an adhesion promoter then clear. With this process, I think I’d need to first clear over my base coat as one can’t leave basecoat for more than a day as to ensure good adhesion between the clear and the base. Obviously flat the clear down before applying the size and leaf. Correct?

My main question is if the size and leaf are applied over a large area, will this Dux size with adpro over the leaf provide really good adhesion between all layers (primer, base, clear, size, leaf, adpro, clear)? Similar adhesion as I’d get from the usual base clear process(primer, base, clear)?

Another thing, I live in South Africa where Dux and SPI (for the adpro) is not available. Any thoughts on how the heck I’d be able to airfreight this stuff over to me from the US?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

You should be using an oil based size. They have quick dry or regular but both are really slow compared to everything else. After the leaf goes down you need to wait 1-2 days for the size to dry then spray a little adpro on the leaf or you can reduce down some size with mineral spirits and lightly mist some of that over the leaf. Adpro is way faster. If you mist the size then you need to let that dey before you clear over it. You can do all your leaf work over base or sanded clear. Even though a tech sheet will say it, base does not need to be cleared in 24hrs. You can leave most base sit for weeks and clear over it without adhesion issues.You can let the base dry for an hr or so then start your leaf work. I het most of my stuff from lagoldleaf.com. Not sure if they ship international.
