Got a great deal on a new Arrow Desiccant Dryer

Does this arrow also have a filter inside the canister along with desiccant? I was reading the link and they had replacement filters for sale. I wasn’t sure if they applied to this.

@Chris_Hamilton
I just went to the link you posted. The unit is up to $133 (still a bargain) but the product description says 15 SCFM.
Quoted from website:
  • Zoro #: G7821005
  • Mfr #: D12-04XL
Desiccant Dryer/Filter,15SCFM,2 Qt,1/2"

Am I looking at the same item you purchased? Am I misunderstanding how the SCFM rating works? It's not really an issue for me since my compressor is probably around 9 SCFM realistically, but I would like the headroom for future upgrades.

Thanks,
Emil

The description is wrong. The rated flow is 25-30 cfm. The 15 cfm rating is the smaller 1 quart model.

I ordered a $10 item from Zoro several months ago, and once they had my email I get promo codes for 15% or 20% off any order once or twice a month. Used a 20% code to order one of these when they were still around $122 and it knocked the price down to about $105 including sales tax. Most of their stuff is priced too high just like their daddy Grainger, but this thing is a good deal even before any available discounts.

Thanks metlmunchr, you post prompted me to look for a promo code online so I'm sharing this in case it's useful to anyone here.
There is a promo code available on-line that is good for 20% off at ZORO.COM and this dryer is eligible. The code is GOBBLE20 and is only good for today and tomorrow (2021-12-02 - 2021-12-03) but you can always find promo codes online.
Link to item on ZORO.COM:

I ordered one last week but it has not shipped yet. I called ZORO.COM and asked them if I could apply the code. They said no because the code was not available at the time of purchase but the agent offered to cancel my order and place a new one with the promo code applied. I took him up on the offer and got the dryer for $99 rather than the $133 it is currently listed at.

I must say this about ZORO.COM:
1) They prominently display a Customer Service phone number at the bottom of their home page; not many companies do that.
2) When you call the number you get a stateside native English-speaking agent. (this is not a dig against foreign agents but it does help with the communication)

Thanks Chris_Hamilton, for turning me on to this website.

Cheers,
Emil

How fast was the shipping? Thinking of ordering one in a day or 2. My water pump (compressor) is killin me. I disconnected my Camair and it’s been bad. Replacing those bag/cartridges get pricey after a while especially when they don’t last that long. Also adding a aftercooler this week between pump and tank with a water separator that has a automatic drain. Eliminates most moisture before it even hits the tank. Figure that can’t be a bad thing.

Mine was on back-order until 2021-12-10 which was about 10 days from the purchase date. I have not received a shipping notice so I believe it has not shipped yet.

Are you building your own aftercooler or getting a store-bought unit? I built my own using a 1/2" NPT B&M oils cooler, a 1500 CFM 220 VAC fan from a reclaimed server rack, and a Harbor Freight water separator. I switched the fan from a push to a pull configuration and went from very little water in the tank to none the last few times I have used the compressor. I can post pictures and part numbers if you need them.

Ahh well I’d never have it in time to paint my next round of parts lol. I’ll just take other measures for this job I guess. Luckily it’s just for a old beater truck for my buddy. He just wants them all one color. Said don’t make them perfect lol. As for the aftercooler I’m making my own. A Derale 15300 transmission cooler and a Milton water separator with a auto drain.

FYI/Heads Up for everyone. The one I purchased in this thread broke down this week. The threaded end at the bottom of the brass tube assembly cracked. Allowing it to leak at the base in the middle. I have tried to find replacement parts without sucess. You can find replacements for the inner filter on the tube, but not the tube itself. I searched Arrow's website and found some contact info for help. Emailed and waiting to hear back. Very disappointing that it did not last longer than it did.
I'll post any info that I find out on Arrow customer service, replacement parts, and their availability or lack thereof.

Will be interesting to see how you make out. I know it’s not ideal but it’s a cheap enough deal to just buy another one. Maybe you just got a dud?

I bought one as well. It is not in service yet but I did test it for leaks and it is holding pressure. I'll be watching as well since I couldn't get the contact info on the Arrow website to show up when I was trying to find a mounting bracket. The contact button is dead for me.

No need for dessicant if you have a refrigerated dryer already. You should be getting no moisture downstream of the dryer.

I'm going to test this later this week after the rain stop and the moisture levels drop. I have a large dessicant filter as my last filter in my air system. What my air system consists of is, in order starting from the air compressor. Air compressor, water trap filter, regulator, refrigerated dryer, 75' of 3/4" copper wall manifold, three stage filter ( regulator, oil/water, dessicant) then hose.

What I'm going to do is refresh my dessicant beads with fresh beads and see if, or how long it takes to change color. right now I have my dryer temp set to 40 degrees.

Will post my findings.

The color change doesn't completely show the activation state. Silica gel with cobalt chloride (the blue) will go from pink to blue at about 30%-50% activation. 100% activation is fully "dry". To go full activation takes at least two hours at 225 to 250F. It is a bit faster with a convection oven with the gel in a single layer like on a cookie sheet. Microwaves can dry it, but again it isn't just the color change and microwaves can shatter the bead pore structure rendering it useless. The water molecule is highly polar (receptive to microwave energy) which will shatter the bead lattice. Run the microwave at about 10% power (magnetron on 10%, off 90%) for about an hour or so. The best way to tell full activation is by weight. Silica gel has about a 30% by weight water capacity. So 100 grams fully active gel will weigh 130 grams when fully loaded with water.

Way to bring the tech! :)

If you want some really dry, clean air pack the Arrow unit with some 13x molecular sieve. It will even adsorb many hydrocarbon vapors (compressor oils) and take the dew point below -50. The biggest issue is cost and it’s one use only as it takes about 700F to try and dry it. I mix a bed of silica gel and 13x with a screen separator
