Gun Recommendation / DeVilbiss Plus and Finishline

M

ML504

I’m getting ready to spray my 51 Ford pickup. I’ve used a cheap HF gun for the epoxy and now I need a nicer gun for the base and clear (Motobase LV and SPI Universal Clear). I’m looking at the below 2 guns, the first of which is the GFG670 Plus and the second is the Finishline 4 FLG670. Since I’m only going to be painting this and maybe one or two other projects total, I’m trying to go with a nice gun but also budget friendly. Also, I will be spraying the truck in sections...not all at once. Please let me know your thoughts if the plus is worth the extra money or if the Finishline will work fine. Also, if there are other recommendations in this price range I am open to suggestions.

Thanks,
Matt

I was pleased with Spraygunsdirect in the UK.
I was afraid of high shipping costs but, it was $25 from the UK to S.C.
Iwata Bellaria W400 and a generic cleaning kit, $269 to my house. 5 days total. I know this doesn't help your decision on which spray gun, I'm not qualified to do that.
FYI, I bought it on a CC and immediately my bank stopped the transaction. I had never made an international purchase and that threw a red flag, but was rectified quickly.

Hope this helps a little, K. Lee

I have an Iwata LPH400 and that Finishline 4 and they are both grat guns, but the Finishline does base
and primer better. If I had to pick just one gun (I have several) I would pick the Finishline 4,
with those other size tips you'll be able to spray anything. It's a great gun.
The Iwata sprays clear a little better, but at twice the price, not that much better.

Wow, JC. You surprised me with this one. I do not care much for my Finishline 4. To me it is an air hog with only so, so results and I have reached the point that I never use it but for primer. I have all the tips but would just asoon use my HF purple gun as to use the DeVilbiss for base or clear.

I do have an Iwata LPH400 with 1.4 tip and do love it. It is probably a little slow for an all over but for the way I paint it is perfect.

Ditto. I retired my Finishline guns long ago.

Thank you for the responses. The iwata is a little out of my budget, would the 670plus be a good compromise between the Finishline and the iwata?

You can get the Iwata on eBay for the same money. The seller in Japan is legitimate.

Thanks. I found the Japan seller and it is $369 with 1.4 and silver cap. What cup is recommended, the plastic for around $30 or metal for around $70? Sorry for all of the questions.

It really is not important. I bought my Iwata from Amazon and two used cups from Ebay. 600 and 900 ml with three caps I think for $60.

I do believe you will love the Iwata with the 1.4. I certainly do mine. Good luck however you go.

Thank you again for the help. I ordered the Iwata this morning, it should be here next weekend. Next questions will be on setting it up to spray I suppose.

That will not be an issue. There are many YouTube videos on adjusting a spray gun as well as good advice here. I generally start at 2 1/2 turns out on the fluid and turn the fan adjustment out all the way and then back in just a tadd as long as the fan pattern stays uniform. I always keep paper taped to the wall to test the pattern on.

Buy the dekups system for your gun. It’s great in the fact you can spray upside down or at any angle and also don’t have to wash your cup after. Works great!!!!

I love my DEV GFG-670 PLUS !!!!

I havent used many high end guns so i cant speak on them. But I have 2 devilbiss flg3's that ive been using for 10 years or so. I have no complaints. I think the FL series is great for hobbyists. I bought a set of 2 that came with an assortment of tips. I use them for everything. Its just a matter of changing tips and adjusting air pressure. I can lay clear down as slick as I want and lay metallics down consistently. I know that a higher end gun will out perform these but i think for the money theyre hard to beat especially for a hobbyist. Again im a bit biased because ive used them for so long. Whatever shortcomings these guns have, if any, im able to overcome with technique and adjustment.
As far as adjustment i run all my guns with the fluid 100% open. I dont like using a "choked" gun. The fan i start at 100% and turn it in a little depending on my air pressure. And my air pressure depends on the material im spraying. This makes it very easy to adjust because essentially the only adjustment youre really making is air pressure (and a fine tuning of your fan based on the air pressure).
