How did I end up with 2 cars to paint?

First off I just wanted to say that I have been lurking around these boards for a couple of years but never registered. I am sure there are tons of folks that do the same, the biggest reason I decided to register was simply the fact that these forums are a class act and folks are very respectful to each other. Thanks for that. Since there is no "intro" forum I will do a quick intro. I have been doing my own car restorations since I was 14-15, I painted my first car at 15 with ACME paint. My Dad owned an auto parts store in Boondocksville Missouri at that time and he carried it in the store. Now moving on to my dilemma........My last car I decided to do was a 69 GTO that I owned in HS that I acquired back into my possession 5-6 years ago. My brother in law and I took a long weekend and drove back to Missouri picked the car up and trailered it back to Calif. It was pretty rough so I decided that I would have a shop do the sheet metal work and paint the car rather than do that part myself-not to mention I am not a young as I once was. After 3 body shops and over 3 years of body shop hell the car is back in my driveway in primer again. The last shop finished the paint but after a few months it started peeling and so I took a pressure washer to it and the majority of the clear and much of the base came right off. Long story short the shop blamed PPG but agreed to repaint the car. PPG did provide new paint as well. After 3 months of it sitting back at his shop I went and picked it up last week still not painted again-at this point I was concerned when he finally decided to paint it the quality of work would stink since he just wanted it out of the shop and the since kid is a real door knob I didn't trust him. I did demand the paint-I received most of the paint, one gallon of envirobase (no thinner/reducer) and a gallon of Vibrance VC5700 with 2 qts hardner but no reducer. Since I have not painted in a few years I am working on the learning curve now. All the Verdoro Green metallic base has been sanded off the car and I spent a couple days blocking down his lousy job of blocking it prior to the first time he painted it and am now waiting on some SPI primer and some sealer to arrive so I can start moving forward. I thought I was through painting so I no longer have a quality gun so I will also need a couple guns and I have some pretty solid ideas on what that will be, at this point probably a Tekna Prolite/Pro (1.3/HV30 cap) for base and Sata 4000 B RP (1.3 tip) for clear. Both guns can be had on ebay for a reasonable cost and if I choose to I can put them back on ebay when I am done with them. Any tips on spraying the Envirobase? I am thinking 2 coats then a control coat? Experience with Vibrance?
Here is where it gets a little more complicated........While the GTO was waiting to be repainted I stumbled onto a 68 Road Runner that I couldn't live without and am knee deep in body work with it. The guy I purchased it from had it blasted, epoxied and on a rotisarie when I found it so I was handed a pretty good platform to start with. The RR was originally white and since it is a numbers matching car I want to keep it as original as I can so I was planning on going back with a single stage white. Now I am getting a little concerned about the quality of the single stage paints-at least from what I am reading it seems from a durability standpoint there are very few quality SS paints. Is this the case? If so is there a way to retain the original paint look with bc/cc? I talked to the guys at SPI when I ordered the primer/sealer and they suggested I call Chad up and talk to him which I will when I get a little closer to paint.

My personal opinion is both of those cars deserve base clear unless Black then its painters choice.
 
Thanks Barry- the GTO will get the PPG base/clear since I have it but I am really leaning that way on the RR now as well, I am thinking of getting the base from Chad and the clear from SPI, I already have 2k primer and sealer for the RR from SPI. On a side note the Endura bumper on the GTO was done with PPG envirobase and SPI universal clear. The bumper really kicked the kids rear end that painted the car. I tried to tell him how to do it and he wouldn't listen. I finally took the bumper home and did it as per one of your posts with the SEM epoxy filler and SPI epoxy primer. I was into the bumper alone for about 30hrs or so then took it back to him to shoot the base/clear. Once again he argued with me about the clear but finally he caved in and and used the SPI Universal Clear. When I picked up the bumper he admitted that was some of the best clear he had ever shot. No paint came off the bumper..............

Looking great, and I will say having done many goat bumpers and two classes on how to do the bumpers at the GTO nationals, it's the most challenging part of the job to do right and make it last.

The reason I stopped the classes is people would ask me to look at their beautiful restoration job and want to know why bumper was bubbling in spots, I knew why by looking but not my place to say done wrong, so my answer was not a clue, but the shop that did it would want to see it as they would want it to look like the rest of the car.
The last thing I need was to piss off the body shops, so I bailed.
