How did I mess this up?

Hi,
Still learning about painting, thankfully I have a bunch of parts that never get seen to practice on.
I’ve had a lot of good results but every so often I get something like the photo attached. This happened when shooting the first coat of epoxy mixed 1:1. The picture is sideways, if that matters.

Any advise what causes this. Is it sagging from too much material or is it contamination of some sort?

Fish eyes are not uncommon when spraying the first coat of epoxy if you load it on. Make sure your surface is clean, the wax and grease remover has had plenty of drying time, and do not load the first coat on.

You just want s nice even wet coat. It is better to have more coats than to load it on.

This advice goes for every layer from filler to clear.

Ah I see.
I used 710 W&G and let it dry for 45min, it’s also mid 80’s here. So, I’m probably putting it on too heavy.
If I follow, when I put it on to heavy as the solvents try to escape they mess up the finish.
I’ll dial it’s back before shooting.

Any tips on correcting it? Is it just block sanding and re-shooting?

yes that doesnt hurt anything and can be sanded smooth if needed. with the epoxy, its not fisheyes from the surface being dirty. its from the alcohol in the primer and when you spray too close and too heavy the air from the spray gun flashes off that alcohol making it crater.

Also, make sure you wipe off the W&G remover with a clean rag/towel before it dries. The idea is to remove the contaminants while suspended in the W&G remover.

Epoxy craters, usually happens to me when I'm spraying something complicated and some spot will get hit too much on the first coat.
They will make you very finnicky about prep and cleaning once you've had it happen ;). So when it does happen you know it isn't fisheye because you cleaned the living $hit out of it. :D

Hi,
Yup it’s a 1.4 tip. I did another round this morning that went well. I did some practice lines on paper before shooting the parts and I think I had the spray pattern a little heavy and I was moving way to slow.
This mornings parts turned out great.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Thanks. I never knew the actual reason why it craters.
